[edit] 11th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment

No problem at all! I'll look over the article this afternoon. Best, -- twelsht (talk) 17:04, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Strong article! I cleaned up a few passages that confused me, at least upon the first reading. One that stands out is the passage concerning the battle between the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia. Please read this passage carefully to make sure that I didn't insert inaccuracies while revising it. Most of the changes were kind of picky. Despite the fact that almost everyone knows Abraham Lincoln, I added "U.S. President" to the first reference. I didn't focus as much on MOS issues. One issue that's always confused me is, when to highlight dates. I tend to highlight complete dates, so I thought I'd mention that a number of partial dates were highlighted, e.g., "May 6," which may be quite acceptable. If you wanted to add some color to the piece, you might include an example of the regiment's "foul" behavior when its members were incarcerated by the Confederates. (Note: An editor who reviewed Youngstown Ohio Works made a similar recommendation, which led me to include two sentences about a riot that broke out during a game in Niles.) Perhaps it would be helpful to link the New York City Draft Riots more closely to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. This seems important, given that many New Yorkers (especially immigrants) became less supportive of the war when they concluded that it was not being waged exclusively to preserve the Union. Just a thought: Did this altered mood influence the decline of regiments like the 11th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment? If your sources say so, I would mention this. Overall, this article is quite good, well organized, and comprehensive. I hope this helps! Best, -- twelsht (talk) 19:50, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, Daysleeper, The piece is close to GA quality right now--if it's not already there. It could be improved a bit by drawing a connection between the regiment's declining fortunes and growing opposition to the war among New York City's immigrants, especially recent arrivals from Ireland and Germany. Howard Zinn, in A PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, 1492-PRESENT, describes how the combined effect of conscription and the Emancipation Proclamation soured the city's immigrants on the war and sparked the infamous Draft Riots. I strongly suspect that you'll find a source that connects the growth of anti-war sentiment in New York City to the precipitous decline of its volunteer regiments. Beyond that, you might mention other figures in the regiment who were conspicuous for their bravery. Ellsworth, as the founder of the regiment, should be featured prominently, and he is. The piece would benefit, however, from references to other officers and soldiers. What contributions did they make?
The only article I'm considering for a peer review is Jimmy McAleer, a biography of a baseball figure with Youngstown roots. If you wouldn't mind taking a look at it, I'd certainly appreciate it! Thanks, again, for nominating (and supporting) Youngstown Ohio Works! Best, -- twelsht (talk) 21:43, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Peninsula Campaign

I'm curious about your placement of the image of McClellan and Johnson for this article. I moved it so that it was inline with the text. Your placement placed it above the text, dangling alone, at a screen resolution of 1024x768px. You are within your right to move it, but I am curious as to why you chose to place it above the text. Can you explain? I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance! --Daysleeper47 (talk) 19:52, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Well, the reason I moved it (as I explained in the editing summary) was that I had a little policy that wanted to ensure the info box was flush with the upper right-hand corner of the screen. I think this has a superior visual appearance. However, coincidentally, someone just pointed out to me last night that there is a Wikipedia policy requiring the disambiguation text to precede the box inside the source file, because people using assistive technology have problems reading the arrangement I prefer. So I will have to abandon my self derived policy. Hal Jespersen (talk) 20:55, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jimmy McAleer

Hi Daysleeper, Jayron32 recommended that I request additional copy editing for this article to prepare it for the FAC. If you don't mind, I'd appreciate it if you would nominate this article for FA status after the peer review closes. If I can be of assistance with any of your articles, please don't hesitate to ask! Thanks, again, -- twelsht (talk) 00:23, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Possible reference (11th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment)

Below is a passage from Howard Zinn's social history of the US that might be useful for your article. The decline of the volunteer units certainly reflected growing opposition to--or at least, disillusionment with--the war effort. Zinn describes an environment in which volunteer recruitment became increasingly untenable. Here goes:

"White workers of the North were not enthusiastic about a war which seemed to be fought for the black slave, or for the capitalist, or for anyone but them. They worked in semislave conditions themselves. They thought the war was profiting the new class of millionaires. They saw defective guns sold to the army by contractors, sand sold as sugar, rye sold as coffee, shop sweepings made into clothing and blankets, paper-soled shoes produced for soldiers at the front, navy ships made of rotting timbers, soldiers' uniforms that fell apart in the rain.
"The Irish working people of New York, recent immigrants, poor, looked upon with contempt by native Americans, could hardly find sympathy for the black population of the city who competed with them for jobs as longshoremen, barbers, waiters, domestic servants. Blacks, pushed out of these jobs, often were used to break strikes. Then came the war, the draft, the chance of death. And the Conscription Act of 1863 provided that the rich could avoid military service; they could pay $300 or pay a substitute."
  • Zinn, Howard (1999). A People's History of the United States, 1492-Present. New York: HarperCollins, p. 235.

If this turns out to be useful, you shouldn't need to include the whole passage. Partial quotes are almost always preferable to block quotes. You might even consider paraphrasing this information and adding references.

I hope this helps. Best, -- twelsht (talk) 17:23, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] FAC for Jimmy McAleer

In line with Jayron32's recommendation, I sent this article directly to the FAC. Any comments or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, -- twelsht (talk) 19:12, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Jcu seal small.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Jcu seal small.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:18, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Duly noted. I took care of it. Thanks, --Daysleeper47 (talk) 17:33, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fire test

About your note: Unreferenced means the article content doesn't cite sources, just what do you think the fire test pictures are about from Underwriters Laboratories and Firestop and the time/temperature curves in Fire-resistance rating? Do you think that's doodling or do you actually know anything about the topic? I don't see how anyone could possibly question the weight of painfully obvious evidence on the subject matter. Also, instead of just tagging, what makes it so difficult for you to actually fix the thing, like look it up right here on Wiki and outside of wiki? --Achim (talk) 04:16, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

The answer to your response is on my talk page. --Achim (talk) 01:26, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Daysleeper, as User:Ahering@cogeco.ca used my name in justifying his position on this issue, just so you know, he has a history of this kind of behavior. He knows a lot about the stuff he writes about, but after a lot of tries at educating him about proper WP intent and protocols, he still writes unreferenced articles that are not in accordance with WP:NPOV, WP:NOT#OR, WP:SOAP, WP:NOT#MANUAL. Additionally, he can be rude and will personally attack anyone who disagrees with his edits. As my personal expertise overlaps some of the areas in which he edits, I can tell you he is often correct in his technical knowledge when he sticks to objective issues (as oppposed to personal essays), but he continues to advocate that this personal knowledge is more important than proper WP protocols. Good luck. Fireproeng (talk) 02:55, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] NYC FD

Yeah, indeed. I was pleased to find a couple of emails from him on my return calling me a prick, a facist, intolerant, a damn Nazi, infantile, and an embarassment to my country. Phew. I think he covered it all didn't he? Anyway, I blocked his other IP this morning for three months so I guess in early April we'll have to keep our eyes peeled again! Happy New Year to you too by the way, hope you're well. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:26, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Stub templates and biographies

It is established practice at Wikiproject Stub Sorting that subnational stub types are applied to biography articles only if the person's notability is limited to that area. Otherwise biography articles for people would be likely to acquire considerable numbers of stub templates as a matter of routine, especially in the case of professional athletes. As a result most, but not all of the articles to which you added {{Youngstown-stub}} were reverted. Biographies for which subnational stub types are most commonly considered appropriate are those of politicians and businesspeople running local businesses which have a significant local economic impact. Founders of local institutions or communities are also generally considered to have a localized notability worthy of a subnational stub, if it exists. [edit] Youngstown/Youngstown State tag reversion

I understand what you were saying, and generally I agree with you. But I just thought that the first mention of Youngstown State University was not in the best of places for someone who, while on the page for Youngstown, was hoping to find a link to Youngstown State. To me, it didn't make sense that the first mention of Youngstown State in the "Education" section (where I felt most people looking or a link to the university on that page would go) was not linked. [edit] The Wire

The ANI has discussed the spoiler issue and it appears you were right all along. Please accept my apologies. I've left a couple of comments over on Talk: The Wire (TV series) and the WP:ANI discussion. I would ask that if you add plot information to The Wire articles you use the cite episode template to show which episode the details come from. I'd love some help trying to keep up to date as the new season airs if you are interested in contributing further.--Opark 77 (talk) 14:42, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] GA Review

Just in case you hadn't realised, an article you nominated for GA, 11th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment has been reviewed and is on hold awaiting your response. The problems are largely cosmetic and shouldn't take too long to clear up. Nice work--Jackyd101 (talk) 21:55, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

I was going to ask whether you were coming back to this, but I checked your contributions first to see if you were active and spotted the note you left with SandyGeorgia. If you need more than the proscribed seven days then just let me know and I'll happily extend the deadline. All the best.--Jackyd101 (talk) 18:20, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Extra time is no problem at all, its on my watchlist, so I'll see when you come back to it. Let me know when you feel its ready.--Jackyd101 (talk) 17:55, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Actually, after reviewing the edits made to the article today, I am happy to pass it for GA. It is much improved and I also like the short article you created on the MoH recipient. I have left more detailed notes on the article's talk page. Congratulations.--Jackyd101 (talk) 18:09, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I have grouped the sources you have used below according to suitability. The ones in the acceptable section all appear to be websites from reputable historical organisations or the work of reputable academics. The ones in the lower section I was unsure about. I suggest attempting to identify the authors and establishing their academic credentials or those of their parent organisation to work out whether they are acceptable at FAC.

  • Acceptable
  • All book sources
  • Anything from the New York State Military Museum
  • Anything from the US Army Center of Military History
  • [1] Smithsonian
  • The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History seems to be a reputable organisation.
  • [2] (At first glance this seems to have been written by a reputable academic)
  • Of unclear provenance
  • [3] (Who wrote this? Do they or their organisation have any academic pedigree?)
  • [4] (This appears to be a reproduction of a reliable website somewhere else, so the reference would do better to link there.)
  • [5] (This seems to be reproduced source material, perhaps try to find information on the originals and use those. This may be acceptable at FAC, I am not sure.)
  • [6] (Who wrote this? Do they or their organisation have any academic pedigree?)
  • [7] (Who wrote this? Do they or their organisation have any academic pedigree?)
  • [8] (Who wrote this? Do they or their organisation have any academic pedigree?)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Universityobserver.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Universityobserver.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks for the additional notes on Craig Hollywood. I have learned much about Wikipedia since working on that article and plan to branch out this summer and write articles about other people with my new knowledge. Thanks to the wikipedia editors that I have learned from here. I found out later that you should be careful about doing an article about yourself, but after learning how to do the reference section and everything to qualify the notability, concerns about that vanished. [edit] Unspecified source for Image:TraficantJames.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:TraficantJames.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
