[edit] Adding Maps
If you know of any maps that are not on here, please feel free to add them. Make sure you put them in the right section! Eventually we will want to sort all maps out in a table with author, download link, screenshot, and information. Kflorence 18:46, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- As of now, I think it would be a good idea to limit the map list on this page to maps that are either well known and/or well made (as in both appearance and gameplay). This will help keep the clutter down on the maps page. We can then make a map listing page that would contain all the maps that have ever been created for Day of Defeat/Day of Defeat: Source. If someone else would like to get started on this, feel free. - Kflorence 06:45, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Custom map mentions
In the Day of Defeat: Source Custom Maps section, what is the criteria for inclusion?
A mention on Map Reports: Community-Created Maps (Top 10)??
I myself have a list of around 165 customs maps I've seen on various servers, and that doesn't include private maps, "fun" maps, or surf maps. Pixelface 23:50, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- That is where I drew the current maps listed from, however I think any map that is fairly recognizeable by Source players is a candidate to be listed. In other words, quality maps that are relatively well played. I would love to have a full comprehensive listing of every map out there, but I feel the line must be drawn somewhere as to quality control. This can be debatable though. [edit] Day of Defeat: Source Map Name Reference Database
I've added this link to the article. It can be found here:
http://www.dod-federation.com/map_name.php
As of September 15, 2006, it lists 366 maps, some with author info and release info. --Pixelface 13:11, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Map list corrected
Several maps that were official in the earlier releases had been listed as unofficial. List corrected. Also added para_hedgerow to official list - Waldo
- Thanks Waldo. I'm going to be updating this list into a table for better organization. Eventually I would like to have each map listed with the author and a short description. I'm going to keep the maps on this page limited to well-known or well-made maps, but I think a map listing page should be created sometime with a full list of all maps. Aren't dod_jaged and dod_kalt released maps for Source 1.0 as well? How come it only listed as 1.0 (Not Source 1.0 like dod_donner)—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.64.218.57 (talk • contribs) 12:56 5 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Most played maps and dod_orange/dust/dust2/etc...
(poor english, i'm a beginner, sorry :) )
Could we add a section (like "criticism") which explain the fact that :
1) Most of server (not the *rare* custom server) choose to play only the 2 or 3 most popular maps, making game less fun because same maps => boring and some player perfectly learn where to camp to get kills. (=> like the custom sound phenomenon : server admin add sounds to attract players => unpopular choice : long download wait, making server's upload bandswitch too much used => lag)
2) Some custom maps like dod_orange or dod_dust (appearance of Counter-Strike... => 1/4 of servers :/) are without any of the textures/models/etc... from DoD/DoD:S or custom WW2 pack (ruining all historical ambient/appearance) (only the orange or CS textures) in order to make "pro-gamer" maps, which are more popular every day, because there's more "/rank" players every day (players playing to get kills/frag, to have better stats, to have a better rank => ego), today, nearly half or more server are not using WW2 maps (or really rich custom environment map, but rarely played), so trying to find a DoD or DoD:S server playing many different officials maps (not the 2 most "popular") or custom WW2 maps is always harder, as the quantity of "/rank" players is always growing up. No more original DoD gameplay ?
It is a really important phenomenon, because since 1999/2000 I'm playing HL1, CS, TFC, DoD since beta 1.0 and many multiplayers mods (FA, SI, BG, PVK, NS, TS, etc...), and it happened on all (with 1 or 2 exceptions) mods, the players community (the "first" one) always leaves a mod because the newer players don't want to play in a different way than other game (they want MoH, CoD, Battlefield 1942/2/2142, Counter-Strike, etc... gameplay, not such things like making effort to capture a capture point/flag/zone, attacking even if they wanna die (see FLF [1]), sacrifice for own's team victory (even without any score reward or teamates congratulations), not sniping/camping/waiting every time they can, healing teamates, providing cover/supply, teamwork, etc...).
I don't think the whole phenomenon (the players community evolution : how a community is formed and die) should be in "Day Of Defeat maps" but a "Criticism" section could be interesting.

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Dod strom.jpg
Image:Dod strom.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
