Appreciation protest
Please spam this talk page sign here to show your appreciation for the extensive work that David Shankbone has done on Wikipedia. He has improved it and made it a better illustrated place for everyone. Maybe if we all lovingly spam sign here, he will reconsider his retirement, for he's a jolly good fellow, which nobody—not even WRers—can deny. clicketyclickyaketyyak 21:51, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- I've expressed this to David through e-mail many times, but I wholeheartedly appreciate his work for Wikipedia and Wikinews, and although he is now pursuing his interests outside of the Wikimedia projects, I am certain that his talents will be much appreciated elsewhere. It's a shame that this had to happen in the first place, but that's a part of the drama that comes included with many fantastic editors, unfortunately. seicer | talk | contribs 23:11, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- Agreed. Anyone unfamiliar with the vast extent of David's work should check out the recent writeup of him in the Brooklyn Rail, reviewed and linked on my blog. David can get testy on occasion, and I wouldn't want to endorse every comment he's ever made...but often, that kind of passion is to be expected from such a prolific contributor. I've found David easy to deal with if you address him directly, and sometimes wish that others would give that a shot. Losing him as a contributor will be a great loss to the project, though the work he's already done will provide fertile soil for future editors in any event. -Pete (talk) 23:19, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

- Damn, gone for a week or 2 and this happens. . .good work people. David, let me know if I can do anything to help. R. Baley (talk) 04:11, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- God damn it why are all the good people leaving these days, i know you will be missed. Realist2 (Come Speak To Me) 01:42, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- We need more editors like this. Very valuable contributions to Wikipedia indeed. Not sure of his reasons for leaving yet, but I'm looking into it! --Rebroad (talk) 13:07, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

David, you know I like you, but I don't think an Appreciation Protest will do anything to reduce any of the drama surrounding you or your departure. Yes, I know that you weren't the one who started it. Yes, I'm intentionally signing below the protest, and intend this to be both unindented and un-#'ed..⇒SWATJester Son of the Defender 05:17, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
- So let me get this straight. The way you propose to reduce the drama is by protesting the protest? Hmmm I think I'm going to propose a redirect for Irony to this page. :-D clicketyclickyaketyyak 14:36, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Read your WP:SANTA essay. Great work there and although that's your only work I've come across so far, I'm sure your contributions will be sorely missed. Deamon138 (talk) 23:52, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
- David, is among the greatest Wikipedians which I have had the honor of interacting with in Wikipedia. It is a shame that he and some of our best contributors have been driven from our project because of the constant vandalism to his work and stalking that sometimes goes on in our project. One of the weakness of our project has been that this sort of activity goes on because we do not require editors to duly register themselves and take responsibility for their actions and therefore non-registered editors vandalize and stalk our responsible editors as they wish. David reconsider, however if you wish to remain retired, you know that you have many friends here that support you all the way. Tony the Marine (talk) 22:15, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
