Gaius Stern attended the University of Maryland before going on to grad school at the University of California, Berkeley. He received the Carper Award in 2004. While at Maryland, Stern assisted John Nam and Ramesh Kannappan of the University of Maryland who co-founded the Academic Competition Foundation, the predecessor organization to the Academic Competition Federation. He also edited the West Coast ACF newsletter. [1] Moreover, Stern founded and organizes the Bay Area Academic League (BAAL), which currently organizes academic competitions for 56 teams in the San Francisco Bay Area. [2]

Gaius also recently helped to organize the 2nd annual Bertrand Lecture at San Francisco State University.
