[edit] Requested move

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was move, after the creation/expansion of the article on the impresario and the creation of the dabpage. JPG-GR (talk) 06:44, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

the requested move is put forth by American promoter and arts impresario David Ferguson. A Wikipedia bio for this David Ferguson will be posted by May 2. The reason for the requested move is that David Ferguson, the impresario, wants users to be able to type in just "David Ferguson" and be taken immediately / directly to his biography. A possible alternative would be that -- when a user types in "David Ferguson" -- the user be taken to a single page where both David Fergusons are listed. He, the Ameican David Ferguson, believes too much confusion will result if the user is expected to type in David Ferguson (Impresario) or if they have to locate and access a disambiguation page.

Per instructions, this request was submitted to Wikipedia:Requested Moves -- User:JamesHX (talk) 07:15, 30 April 2008 07:29, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

  • Oppose at this stage at least. No evidence that either David Ferguson is sufficiently prominent to qualify as the primary usage; If so then the undisambiguated name should be a disambiguation page. And then the interesting bit: ...too much confusion will result if... they have to locate and access a disambiguation page... Really. Why would this particular disambiguation result in confusion, I wonder? And I'm sure (;-> the possibility that his career and ego will be enhanced by his being regarded as the primary meaning of the name hasn't been a consideration in making this request. Refer him to Wikipedia:autobiography, which doesn't actually cover this particular request, but I think the same principles should be followed. Lastly, if we must move this article, the disambiguation UK probably isn't the best one. Andrewa (talk) 09:17, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Comment — Wikipedia disambiguation guidelines indicate that the simple name should belong to whichever David Ferguson is more notable, or if neither is clearly the primary usage of that name, to a disambiguation page with links to both. We don't generally move pages in response to requests for self-promotion. Incidentally, a Google search for "David Ferguson" yields a number of people by this name, and it's not immediately clear that any of the top links are the British murderer or the American impresario. Also, I agree that (UK) isn't the best disambiguator; as gruesome as it may seem, I think that the preferred move would be to David Ferguson (murderer). See similar entries in Category:English murderers and similar categories. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 11:07, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose as there are no real reasons given for the move and, as noted above, it seems a disambiguator would be best. ALso agree that (UK) is a pretty poor disambiguator. Narson (talk) 11:21, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Not yet. If the impressario is notable (and let's see his bio and its evidence; and see if it's a copyvio from his agency) we should indeed move this page to David Ferguson (murderer) and set up a disambiguation page. It is conceivable that the impressario is primary usage; but the fact that he (or his flacks) are the first to notice the ambiguity suggest that he is not. • What about setting up a disambiguation page so that a user when typing in "David Ferguson" is taken directly to the disambiguation page. For example, there are two Tom Grants in Wikipedia. But if you type in "Tom Grant", you are taken directly to the disambiguation page and the user can see which of the people he wants to select. Is that possible? Is that the same as the dab page mentioned above?User:JamesHX15:34, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Support move to David Ferguson (murderer) and leaving a dab page. It is not clear that there is a primary use. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:31, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
