[edit] Photograph
In an email to me, Dr. Chaum had authorized the use of the photograph from his homepage. The deletion from the Commons repertoire was completely unnecessary. Functionaries really know to make participating fun.--Psycho Chicken 20:43, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
- I sympathise, but we have to be careful to ensure images are free (Public domain, GFDL or certain Creative Commons licenses, etc). Did he authorise it for use under a free license? — Matt Crypto 08:36, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

- This is a PM and I do normally not advocate such publication. Oh could some of the "responsible-to-whoever" folks who delete such photos PSE make the same effort as I did to simply ask about the object in question, before acting prematurely... If it is of no use, I will no longer try to find photos, find addresses, ask for such authorization... Then it is your Wikipedia, and yours alone.--Psycho Chicken 08:57, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for contacting David Chaum. I've also obtained permissions for photographs from various cryptographers, so I know the effort involved. I agree it would have been good if someone had asked you before deleting it, but one problem is that the above only gives Wikipedia permission to use the photograph, which means it's still "non-free" by the definition we need. Wikipedia is a "free" encyclopedia in several ways, and one thing is that other people have the right to make copies and derivative works of it (e.g. Answers.com). Have a peruse of pages like Wikipedia:Image use policy and Wikipedia:Copyrights. — Matt Crypto 12:04, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
Chaum is a visiting professor at K.U. Leuven's COSIC group: http://www.esat.kuleuven.be/scd/people.php?view=2 -- should this be included in his bio? NoDepositNoReturn (talk) 03:35, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
