[edit] Random Comments
"Lombardo's parents noticed his withdrawal from everything except music, convincing Lombardo to quit and find a job.[3] Lombardo got a job as a pizza delivery boy at the local pizza shop in 1981. With the money Lombardo purchased a TAMA Swingstar drum set and Paiste Rude cymbal package for $1100 USD.[4] Lombardo was fired from Slayer in 1992"
clearly a lot is missing there. there is a huge chunk of time unaccounted for between his teenage job and getting fired from slayer. (when did he join slayer? etc etc)
- There was a reference that was missing a '/' i added it and the two paragraphs are back thanks for spotting it out. M3tal H3ad 06:41, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
removed the following:
"Lombardo has been compared to the likes of Virgil Donati, Mike Portnoy etc."
doesn't seem relevant. Maybe if it were re-worded: "Lombardo's skill is comparable to many reknown modern drummers such as Virgil Donati and Mike Portnoy"
So, which is it: was he born in 1963 or 1965? The entry gives both years.
- [1] says 1963. Spearhead 5 July 2005 11:49 (UTC)
"lombardo is one of few drummers who plays double bass with calf muscle". what exactly does this mean? normally heel down means you use more calf muscle, but watching lombardo video's, he seems more heel up and is definitely moving his upper legs at speed. can you embelish on this?
I respect this guy fully, hands down. But this article, is a bit too much POV.
I agree, some of it is way too much POV. Half the article seems to be appraising his drum skills rather then his work.
Paragraph 4, 5 and 6 do not make much sense. I agree with the above statements; it doesnt make any sense saying that he plays double bass drums with with his calf muscle, because he does not. Dave utilzes a heel up technique. And "playing with his calf muscle results in a fuller sound..." - this is a absolutely ridiculous claim. Lots of drummers who use the heel down techinque deliver a good solid sound on the kick drum.
"The few drummers that can match his legendary doublebass speed and endurance are clearly giving their all while doing so." A lthough Dave is a legendary drummer and one of my idols, there are a lot of drummers out there who can play at similar speeds, or if not, greater speeds.
Its also typed up with poor english. I would clean it up, but as it is a long paragraph would not want to step on any toes. (I would rather delete all 3 paragraphs)
Hm, "He is also not related to Tommy Lee Jones." Has anyone suspected him to be? highlunder 23:16, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- When i read that, i laughed. Not sure how Dave Lombardo and Tommy Jones would have any relation, anyway i re-wrote the article removed a lot of crap blah blah etc etc M3tal H3ad 10:47, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Work with Testament
Lombardo also played the drums on Testament's album The Gathering. The Testament (band) article mentions it in passing. Probably worth mentioning here if anyone has any more details. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mhoulden (talk • contribs) 16:54, 3 February 2007 (UTC).
[edit] Gene Hoglan
Gene used to be Dave's roady in the early days. from Hoglan's article: "In 1984, Hoglan began his music career as a roadie (lights engineer) for the seminal thrash metal band Slayer, where he also played the drums during the soundcheck [2]". It should be somewhere noted in the article. And also that Gene inspired Dave to play faster and use double bass etc... Spearhead 10:36, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fastest?
"Lombardo is known as one of the fastest and aggressive drummers". He certainly is not the fastest anymore. I guess this should be changed so that it refers to the early days of slayer (show-reign era). And such a bold claim needs proper references. Spearhead 10:44, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GA on hold
I have put this article on hold according to the GA criteria. The article meets the broad, factually accurate, and stable requirements. Throughout the article may be some statements or words that may be seen as POV, so take a look to avoid this. I don't think it's too much of a problem, but there are multiple grammar and prose issues that need to be fixed before I pass it.
In the second sentence of the Early years section change "bongos and Santana record" to "bongos and a Santana record". The rest of the sentence should be rewritten as well.Add wikilinks for: USD,"Lombardo taught himself the drumming from the song "100,000 years", and was asked if he could play the song "Moby Dick" by Led Zeppelin." Asked by who? And who is the 100,000 years song by?Reword this sentence (influenced), "Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham influencing Lombardo's style and drumming ability."I don't think that "- left, right, left, and right" is necessary for the sentence, just elaborate on the repetitiveness part."After leaving the music lesson, Lombardo's friends exposed him to the genre, disco." Change the last part to "disco genre"."Becoming a temporary DJ under the name "A Touch of Class", playing at parties; "The music I was exposed to at that time showed me the effects of rhythm on the body." Reword, and consider breaking up into two sentences."With his new found popularity, Lombardo formed a band in 1979 called "Escape", with two guitarists, performing AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath songs in Lombardo's garage." Add comma after Zeppelin, if desired, but not necessary."On leaving "Sabotage", Lombardo received threats from the guitarist's girlfriend; "the so-called manager went as far as to write a poem about me leaving the band in the school news paper saying,'we'll see who makes it to the top, lets place a bet.' I should of made that bet." Need a space between "saying, 'we'll"."Lombardo took his parents advice," Change to parents' advice. The article makes use of a lot of hypens, perhaps consider converting some of them to commas or use the proper method of hyphens at &mdash ;."Lombardo asked Hoglan to become his drum tutor, however, Hoglan was fired as the roadie as he had no idea what to do, nor was told." Reword last half of sentence."King states Lombardo is a major attraction for the fans, and one of the reasons for their surge in popularity. King wishes Bostaph no ill will, but prefers playing with Lombardo, as do the other band members." Reword to be more encyclopedic since it's not listed here as a quote. Don't use "states" or "no ill will". Either reword or convert to a proper quote."Sorychta asserts people always spot out mistakes in their music," Remove "out""However, when Lombardo uses the double bass people complain "now Grip Inc. sound exactly like Slayer."" Add comma after bass."but hints the band may return in the future." Changed to hinted"asking if he would like to join his fusion project, Lombardo replied "Fuck yeah!" Change to ", and Lombardo replied" or ", with Lombardo replying"."Lombardo asserts it's the hardest music he's played "Slayer". Change to "Lombardo asserted it was the hardes music he's played by saying "Slayer" or something to that effect."Lombardo states his reasons for using two bass drums;" change the semicolon to a colon.Perhaps change the heading "Influence" to "Influence on other musical artists" or something to that effect. Otherwise some readers may skip to that section to see what he was influenced by.- Although not having an image is not grounds for failing an article, blah, blah, blah, I still have to suggest attempting to get a free image if possible if you can. Good luck, I know it's hard to get free images of celebrities.
This is just a side note, but if you can fix the cite templates in edit mode by removing the spaces to condense them down into a few lines, rather than taking up large blocks of space. This will make it easier for other edits to edit specific sections.
Altogether, a good article, but needs a few things fixed. If you don't think that some of these apply, then simply ignore them. Consider crossing of the above suggestions as you complete them to get a better gauge on your progress. I'll leave it on hold for seven days and then will fail it if the above suggestions are not fixed. If you have any questions or when you finish fixing the suggestions, please let me know on my talk page. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to pass the article. --Nehrams2020 19:52, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- Good job fixing the mistakes so quickly. There are still a few things that need to be refixed, as they don't sound like they're in the present tense. These should be really quick to fix. --Nehrams2020 07:45, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- "Lombardo had heard of the band, but not their music, eventually becoming exposed to an all new genre, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham influencing Lombardo's style." Perhaps change this to "Lombardo had heard of the band, but had not heard their music. After doing so, he eventually was exposed to an all new genre, with Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham influencing Lombardo's drum-playing (if drum-playing is correct, if not replace with another better term) style.
- "After leaving the music lesson, Lombardo's friends exposed him to the disco genre, becoming a temporary DJ under the name "A Touch of Class", playing at parties. "The music I was exposed to at that time showed me the effects of rhythm on the body."[1]" Change to "...disco genre, where he played at parties as a temporary DJ under the name "A Touch of Class". Lombardo later said that "the music...".
- "Lombardo asserted it was the hardest music he's played by saying "Slayer "Slayer doesn't even come close. Slayer was hard in a physical way, but this is physically demanding as well and requires "feeling"." There's an extra "Slayer in there.
[edit] GA passed
Good job getting the fixes done so quickly and I have passed the article according to the GA criteria. Continue to improve the article making sure all new information is sourced and keep looking for a free image. Good work and congratulations. --Nehrams2020 20:34, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Wintersun?
No idea where this came from, but the information about Lombardo playing with Wintersun is something I've never heard of before, and I can't find anything to support the claim. Anyone know anything about it? Does it need removing? 212.49.210.37 15:28, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
- Someone added it awhile ago and i removed all the mentions of Wintersun but he seems to of added them back. Removed now, thanks. M3tal H3ad 03:29, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] This was in the Decade of Aggression article for some reason
[edit] Lombardo's second departure
Lombardo left Slayer for the second time in May of 1992, due to conflicts with other band members and his desire to bring his wife on tour.[1] The band listened to hundreds of demo tapes to recruit a new drummer, until King's guitar technician, John Tempesta recommended the band to try out Testament drummer Paul Bostaph.[2] Although Slayer members were hesitant about Bostaph's ability to fit into the Slayer momentum, Lombardo's style being "over the top" while Forbidden more melodic,[2] he was recruited as the new Slayer drummer. Bostaph was trailed with nine songs, making one error on "Angel of Death". Prior to the "big double bass part" there's a lead section, which Bostaph could not understand, as he had to learn from live records recorded with Lombardo.[2] Bostaph could not tell how many revolutions the guitar riff goes before the bass sequence; the band members told him there was eight, "perfecting" the song after.[2]
Saving it here in case it can/should be integrated into his article. 205.167.180.132 (talk) 16:09, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
