Davis High School is a public school located in Kaysville, Utah, United States. It is a member of the Davis School District. The mascot of Davis High School is a Dart. The school has been divided into five "small schools" based on student interest in an attempt to create smaller groups of students taught by the same teachers. The five small schools are Social and Human Services(SHS), Business and Information Systems(BIS), Arts and Humanities(A&H), Fitness and Health(FHS), and Math, Science, and Technology(MST).[1] The school was established in 1914 and underwent reconstruction during the 2003-2004 school year.[2]

[edit] Renovations

Numerous renovations have occurred to the original 1914 building. Before being torn down in 2003, it had several abandoned and even condemned classrooms which were always kept locked. Groups such as orchestra, band, and theater were given safe, but deserted, classrooms and/or large closets to use as storage space. These portions of the building were called "Siberia" by students because of their remote locations. Urban legends about the building were spread throughout the community before its destruction. Perhaps the most famous of these is the rumor of an abandoned swimming pool. There is still a large amount of controversy regarding the existence of this pool. Many teachers who have taught at the school for long periods of time claim that it never existed. On the contrary some students claim that ancestors who helped build the school have confirmed the existence. Some alumni have even given a location for the pool as beneath the girls' gymnasium. During the 2003-2004 school year they offered tours to the students at the end of the school year. Many of these students were able to see the pool along with many other things. The students that attended these tours can confirm its existence, proving that the pool is more then just a rumor.

[edit] Academics

Davis High School was the number one school in the state of Utah in regards to AP exams taken (1,345) and percent of AP exams passed (83.5%).[3] Davis High School also has an extremely high graduation rate, at 98.6% during the 2005-2006 school year.[4]

[edit] Davis High School Marching Band

The Davis High School Marching Band has had a long tradition of excellence. It now regularly competes on the state level against the American Fork High School Marching Band and Sky View High School Marching Band. In the past the band has been a 2000 Bands of America finalist, and participated in the Rose Parade of 2003. During the 2008 season it will compete in the Red Rocks Competition, as well as a Bands of America Regional and other local competitions such as the Davis Cup, in which it is the defending champion.

[edit] Athletics

The Darts participate in class 5-A, the highest classification of high school athletics in the state of Utah. They consistently rank among the states top teams in overall sports. The Darts won the Utah class 5-A state basketball championship in 2002 and the state 5-A football championship in 2004. Davis also was the recipient of the Utah High School Activities Association All-Sports Award for the 2004-2005 school year.[citation needed]

[edit] School Store

Davis High School has a student-run school store called "The Point" open every day at lunch. The Point sells desserts, drinks, and various lunch items as well as school apparel. The store is run by students in the retail class, part of the School of Business.[6]

Davis High School's former building, which stood from 1914 until 2003, housed a school store called The Canteen. Like The Point, this location offered a selection of food and beverage items as well as school-related merchandise.

[edit] Davis Dart

The Davis Dart is the official news publication for the school. The student staff is collectively referred to as the Dart Staff. The publication is released monthly, except during the summer months.

[edit] Rivalries

Davis has a rivalry with Viewmont High School. Viewmont and Davis are crosstown rivals and have recently been at the top of the Region 1 standings in most major sports. Some have suggested that the Davis-Viewmont rivalry is the fiercest high school sports rivalry in Utah.[7]

There is also a rivalry between Davis and Layton High School. Sports events in the past have occasionally ended in fights between the two student bodies as well as occasional vandalism of each other's facilities.

There is also a rivalry between the Davis band program and American Fork's band program.
