DaVinci Academy of Science and The Arts is a charter school located in Ogden, Utah, USA. It started in August of 2004, located in the basement of the Old Post Office on 24th Street. During its first year in operation, DaVinci's student body only consisted of 9th and 10th grade. DaVinci Academy is now in its third year of operation with grades 9-12.
The founding premise of the charter school was a project-based learning environment focusing on art and science classes. DaVinci's graduation requirements call for more credits in the specific areas of math, science and English than Utah's public school system. It has experienced a frequent fluctuation of students throughout its first 3 years. The spring of 2007 brought DaVinci Academy's first graduating class. Most graduates had been at the school since the very first day it opened its doors. The graduation ceremony was held held at Peery's Egyptian Theater on May 25, 2007.
The school has been known for its bad exposure in the local newspaper The Standard Examiner and gained worldwide notoriety when Jon Stewart was supposedly booked to attend a dinner fundraiser for the Academy during the 2005-06 school year. Due to miscommunication between the school's administration, tickets were sold to see the "Daily Show's" Jon Stewart. The Jon Stewart the school had booked was actually the former wrestler turned motivational speaker. Many hopeful attendees to withdrew their donation and/or demanded a refund on their ticket. DaVinci went ahead with the fund raiser with Johnny Biscuit, a Utah comedian, hosting the event.
[edit] The Beginning
DaVinci Academy was founded on the idea of bettering education for the Ogden Community. Parents and community members wanted area teens to have access to better education. In turn they wanted the teens to have a chance at a better future.
