[edit] Career

Wheater is a goalscoring central defender who scored three league goals & one goal in the F.A cup in his breakthrough season of 2007 - 2008. He had a brief loan spell at League One side Doncaster Rovers from January to April 2006. Things did not go to plan at Doncaster so David moved on but he did bag himself a goal during the loan.

He joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on a three month loan in September 2006.[1] However, he returned to Middlesbrough on 15 November, after making just one first team appearance.[2] This was because the loan was supposed to provide the young defender with valuable experience, but, given he was not playing first team football, he wasn't achieving this, and so Wolves sent him back.[citation needed]

On 12 May 2007, Wheater scored his first goal for Middlesbrough against Fulham. He scored again in the match against Birmingham, on 1 September 2007. Wheater was named in an understrength Middlesbrough side away to Bristol City in the FA Cup third round, when he saved his team with a goal as he burst forward from the back and scored the winner in a 2–1 at Ashton Gate. Matt Le Tissier was reporting the match on Gillette Soccer Saturday and made the following comment about the goal; "Wheater carried on his run and he came in with a right foot finish - a great finish for a centre back - it was Beckenbauer-esque!" He has just signed a five year contract with Middlesbrough lasting until 2012. Fabio Capello stated when naming his first provisional England squad, that England U21 players like David Wheater, Joe Hart, Aaron Lennon and Theo Walcott were in his plans for future squads, and weren't included in the full squad due to the importance of the upcoming England U21 international.

On 20 March 2008, Wheater was called up to the England squad by boss Fabio Capello.[3] He was advised by Middlesbrough team mates not to take his autograph book if he made the final cut, [4] however he was not included in the Capello's final 23. George Boateng revealed that Wheater regularly comes into the Boro changing rooms with merchandise to sign for family and friends. [5]

David experienced his best season of football during the 2007/08 season, starting as a regular for Gareth Southgate's side and becoming an imposing force at the back that has been linked with clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle & Tottenham. It was rumoured that Real Madrid where close to bidding for the U21 england international, but he signed a new contract with his beloved Middlesbrough.

On Thursday 15th May, Wheater captained the England U21 team for the first time against their Welsh counterparts at Wrexham's Racecourse ground. He led the team to a 2-0 victory, with goals coming from Tom Huddlestone(pen) and Theo Walcott. Wheater was joined in the starting line-up by 3 fellow Boro youngsters in Adam Johnson, Andrew Taylor and Lee Cattermole.

Wheater is well known in his hometown of Redcar for his love of bingo and lemon top ice cream.

[edit] Acting

  • Despite a story printed in the tabloid Daily Mirror, David did not star as an extra in the film "Atonement" which was filmed at his hometown Redcar. Wheater was asked whether this was true in an interview on Radio station BBC Tees' Gobstopper show. He said he'd read the story and it was news to him.
