David Vandervelde started making music by playing guitar in a Michigan based hardcore metal band called Fable (Darek James, Jonathan Klyne) at the age of 14. Fable recorded 2 records ("give us the night" and a split with Mara akate) between 1998 and 2000. Soon after David parents help buy him minimal recording equipment and started recording more acoustic based music while attending Holland Christian High School in Michigan. His first song officially released was "like Judas" appearing as track 1 on the 3rd unsigned bands sampler by Velvet Blue Music. During this time David also recorded the first proper demo for Entrance in his parents basement. This demo lead to Guy Blakeslee's (Entrance) first release on Tiger Style Records.
While his mother was working at a local church, in 2001 David was approached by a Christian film company called Flannel seeking to hire him to record his music (both instrumental and vocals) to be used in their Christian based films featuring his mother's pastor, Rob Bell (http://www.marshill.org).
In 2003 David Vandervlede moved to Grand Rapids Michigan where he recorded local bands and friends out of his basement studio at 1310 Bemis st. He recorded and played on Brie Stoner's demo for a Grand Rapids Label Fonic Records. After Fonic heard the demos, they signed Brie and wanted her to make a studio record with David Vandervelde and Jay Bennett (formerly of Wilco) at his Pieholden Studio in Chicago. This led to David Vandervelde and Jay Bennett developing a strong friendship and working relationship. Eventually David was invited to move to Chicago and assist Jay with recording bands as well as help on Jay's solo records . David Vandervelde Moved to Pieholden Studios in Chicago during early 2004.
While living and working at the studio in Chicago, David Vandervelde began a 2 1/2 year long writing and recording streak which lead to him compiling the tracks needed for his debut solo record "the Moonstation House Band". At this time David Vandervlede appears on Jay Bennett's records "Bigger than Blue" and "the Magnificent Defeat". David Vandervelde also recorded "Prayer of Death" by Entrance at Pieholden.
Now David Vandervlede lives in Brooklyn, NY and is soon moving to a house in Nashville, Tn. (as of April 15 2008)
All of his solo albums to date have been released on the Secretly Canadian record label.
