David Strand is a professor at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He did his undergraduate work at Lawrence University (BA 1971), and received his graduate degrees from Columbia University (MA 1973, M.Phil 1974, PhD 1979). Strand holds the position of Charles A Dana Professor of Political Science and is the current chair of the East Asian Studies Department.
Strand's research interests include 1920s China, particularly Beijing. He is the author of the acclaimed study of this period, Rickshaw Beijing: City People and Politics in the 1920s. He teaches a regular course on the history of China and Japan, as well as other courses such as Human Rights, Four Chinese Cities, East Asian Senior Research, among other courses in the East Asian Studies and Political Science departments.
