[edit] Career

Stockdale was developed through the York City youth system and made his Football League debut when coming on as a substitute on the last day of the 2002–03 season. He was named in the England National Game XI squad in October 2004.[2] He stated his determination at earning a new contract with York in January 2005,[3] but turned a contract down in June.[4] He had loan spells at Wakefield & Emley and Worksop Town during the 2005–06 season.[5][6] He was released by York City at the end of the 2005–06 season after being publicly criticised by manager Billy McEwan about his weight.[7]

Stockdale joined Darlington in August 2006 after impressing in a period on trial in pre-season.[7] He made eight appearances in the 2006–07 season[8] and when first-choice goalkeeper, Andy Oakes, was sent off in the opening game of the 2007–08 season, Stockdale took over and became manager Dave Penney's preferred choice in goal.[9] He was rewarded with a new contract in November 2007[10] and went on to make over 40 appearances for Darlington in the 2007–08 season.[11] In April 2008, he was linked with Birmingham City and Newcastle United,[12] but Darlington later accepted a £350,000 bid, with rumors stating the fee could have risen to £600,000 from Fulham.[13][14] Despite this, he played for Darlington in the play-offs, where they eventually lost on penalties 5–4 after the matches had ended 3–3 on aggregate.[15] He completed his move to Premier League side Fulham on 4 June 2008 on a two-year deal for an an undisclosed fee.[16]
