David Smith (bishop)

The Rt Rev Dr[1]David James Smith was an Anglican Bishop during the latter part of the 20th Century and the early part of the 21st. Born on 14 July 1935 and educated at King’s College London[2], he was ordained in 1959. His first post was as Curate at All Saints, Gosforth [3], after which he became Vicar of Monkseaton [4]. Following this he was appointed Rural Dean of Tynemouth then Archdeacon of Lindisfarne . In 1980 he ascended to the Episcopate as Bishop of Maidstone and was translated to Bradford seven years later[5]. In retirement he continues to serve as an Honorary Assistant Bishop within the Diocese of York.
