David Pinkerton

David Pinkerton (1836 - 1906) was a New Zealand Member of Parliament for Dunedin City, in the South Island.

David Pinkerton represented the Dunedin City electorate in the New Zealand House of Representatives from 1890 to 1896 (Wilson, p.227).

Pinkerton headed the poll for Dunedin City in 1890 and 1893. He played a prominent role in Dunedin trade unionism in the late 1880s, was active in the anti-sweating movement, and served as President of the Otago Trades and Labour Council (Hamer, pp.185-5).

David Pinkerton was appointed to the Legislative Council after his 1896 defeat (Thomson, p.390; see Wilson, p.161 says 1899 to death in 1906).

Born in Scotland, Pinkerton came to New Zealand in 1861 (Hamer, p.365).
