David Patten (born August 19, 1974 in Hopkins, South Carolina) is an American football wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League. He was originally signed by the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 1997. He played college football at Western Carolina.
Patten has also played for the Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots and Washington Redskins in his career. He won three Super Bowl rings with the Patriots.
[edit] Professional career
Patten is most remembered for his performance in a game with New England vs. the Indianapolis Colts on October 21, 2001, when he became only the sixth player in NFL history to rush, catch, and throw for a touchdown in a 38-17 win. Patten also had a touchdown reception in Super Bowl XXXVI. The Patriots would upset the St. Louis Rams with a 20-17 victory.
However, Patten's 2005 season (his first with the Redskins) was filled with disappointment. Despite not producing on the field (22 catches in 9 games), he was open in criticizing the Redskins for not getting him the ball. Then, on November 18, he was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.
Patten's 2006 campaign with the Redskins was much of the same. Patten only played in the first four games of the season, and did not start a single one. In fact, Patten only made one 25-yard catch in the 2006 season - this during a Redskins Week 3, 31-15 shellacking of the Houston Texans.
On March 22, 2007 the Redskins released him. A few weeks later, he signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints.[1]
