David Patchen

Patterns of cane and murrine picked up on a bubble of molten glass.

David Patchen is American glass artist who utilizes the Italian techniques of cane and murrine in an American style. (Cane are colored and patterned glass rods, murrine are patterned cross-sections of glass 'tiles'.) Patchen's work is known primarily for a combination of complexity and scale in intricate patterned work. His work is in a number of private collections, featured in publications, juried shows and galleries internationally.

Born in New Rochelle, New York, Patchen currently resides in San Francisco, California. He studied at Public Glass in San Francisco, at the studio of Afro Celotto, maestro and former assistant to Lino Tagliapietra in Murano, Italy, and at Pilchuck Glass School on an artistic merit scholarship. He has assisted artists including Afro Celotto and Marvin Lipofsky in creating their work.

Patchen's series include forms titled "Resistenza", "Foglio" and "Parabola", which are created in either complex murrine or the simpler mixed cane and murrine.

Patchen is actively involved in the glass arts community in San Francisco as Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors at Public Glass and is a former member of the Board of Directors, Glass Alliance of Northern California.
