David Ossman

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Ossman (born December 6, 1936 in Santa Monica, California) is the oldest member of The Firesign Theatre. He plays George Leroy ("Peorgie") Tirebiter on Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers and Catherwood in the Nick Danger series.

In 1973, he recorded the solo album How Time Flys. During the 1980s David left the Firesign Theatre, primarily to produce programs for National Public Radio.

During the 1990s David and his wife, Judith Walcutt, formed Otherworld Media, through which they produced audio theatre for children, as well as a series of major star-studded audio theatre broadcasts for NPR, including We Hold These Truths (1991), Empire Of The Air, War Of The Worlds 50th Anniversary Production [1], Raymond Chandler's Goldfish, and the 100th Anniversary audio theatre adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

His latest Otherworld Media Productions include A Thousand Clowns, Through the Looking Glass, and A Taffetas Christmas. These performances are held at Whidbey Children's Theater on Whidbey Island, a local theatre where children can come to do plays and workshops. Ossman currently resides on Whidbey Island with his wife and their two sons, Orson and Preston.

Sadly, Mount Rainier National Park Rangers found the body of Ossman's oldest son, Devin, on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, less than two miles from the trailhead where Devin had parked his car two days earlier, for a day hike on Mount Rainier. His wife had reported him missing early Tuesday, March 18th. Devin Ossman's body was found east of Mount Rainier's Kautz Creek Trail; he was 45. Devin was raised in Southern California, and studied classical flute, graduating from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1984. A talented flutist, Devin Ossman was a member of Washington's Whidbey Island's tightly knit arts scene. Devin used to own an Oak Harbor toy store but moved to Mukilteo, WA., in 2007. At his family's request, his concert date has been left open for a community memorial.

[edit] The Price of Fame

In the Feb 21, 2006 "Feedback" column of PC Magazine, Chris Sherlock (a Wikipedia administrator) wrote:

Although Wikipedia has many oddball articles (for instance, we have one on Exploding whales) not everything can be included. We routinely delete articles about people who are deemed to be non-notable (admittedly, this is a fairly low standard - we have an article on David Ossman...)

This leads to the following definition:

  • One Ossman: the smallest unit of fame that will get you into Wikipedia.
