David Navarro Pedrós (born May 25, 1980 in Valencia) is a Spanish football player who currently plays centre back for Valencia CF after beeing a year on loan for RCD Mallorca.
Navarro was involved in a on-pitch brawl that occurred during a Champions League tie between Valencia and Inter Milan on March 6, 2007. Navarro, who had spent the match on the bench as an unused substitute, ran onto the pitch as the brawl began with an exchange of words and what appears to be a kick by Valencia midfielder Marchena at Inter Milan's Nicolas Burdisso.[1] On the pitch Navarro punched Burdisso in the face, while Burdisso was being held back by his team-mates[2] breaking the Inter player's nose. He then proceeded to run away, chased by Inter players Julio Ricardo Cruz, Iván Córdoba, and Maicon, who attempted to trip him.
As the scuffles continued on the field, Navarro sought refuge in the Valencia dressing room. Inter goalkeeper Francesco Toldo entered the Valencia dressing room to confront Navarro, while Inter players Luís Figo and Esteban Cambiasso scuffled with security personnel that tried to prevent them from entering the Valencia dressing room too.[1]
On March 7, 2007 UEFA charged Carlos Marchena and David Navarro of Valencia, and Inter's Nicolas Burdisso, Iván Córdoba and Maicon with "gross unsporting conduct". [3]
Navarro later apologized for his involvement in the incident, stating he was "very sorry and ashamed" for his actions and also noted he would contact Burdisso to apologize.[3]
On March 14, 2007, after reviewing video evidence of the brawl, UEFA suspended Navarro for seven months from European football (It was later reduced to six months). They have applied to FIFA to allow the ban to cover both domestic and international games, and on March 20, Navarro had his ban applied to all games ending his season.
