David Luiz Moreira Marinho or otherwise known as David Luiz (born on April 22, 1987 in São Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian U-20 international who currently plays for Sport Lisboa e Benfica.

Luiz shot from almost complete obscurity to become a Benfica mainstay in a matter of weeks at the tail end of the 2006/07 season. As well as his considerable height and robust build, which he is not averse to throwing around when need be, there is his ability to move the ball with grace and ease that has led many to predict a brilliant future for the young Brazilian.

[edit] Career

His former club was Esporte Clube Vitória where David made his debut at 16 years of age. At Vitória he quickly established as first-choice with his quick aerial ability and toughness on the field.

In January 31, 2007, David Luiz joined Sport Lisboa e Benfica on loan, and made a somewhat tumultuous debut in UEFA Cup against Paris SG at the Parc des Princes, joining Anderson on the center of the defense, replacing the injured Luisão. Benfica lost the match 2-1, but managed to go through to the next round after winning 4-3 on aggregate.

On March 12, 2007 he played his first Superliga match for Benfica against U.D. Leiria. [1] At the end of the season, Luiz signed a five-year deal with Benfica. On August 5, 2007 he scored his first goal for Benfica in the Torneio de Guadiana against Sporting CP.
