David Latchman

Professor David S. Latchman (born 1956) is a British geneticist and university administrator. He is Master of Birkbeck, University of London, and Professor of Genetics at Birkbeck and University College London.

Latchman received his doctorate from Cambridge University before undertaking postdoctoral research at Imperial College London and in the Department of Biology at University College London. He has worked in the Medical Molecular Biology Unit at UCL and Middlesex School of Medicine. He has been Professor of Molecular Pathology and Director of the Windeyer Institute of Medical Science at UCL.

He is also Chair of London Higher, and a Board member of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the School of Oriental and African Studies, the Heath Protection Agency and the National Institute of Biological Standards. He is also the founder of BioVex Ltd (now Biovex Inc), a company established with venture capital funding to exploit patents developed by his laboratory.

As Master of Birkbeck, he has voiced protest at UK government proposals to cut funding for second degrees.[1]
