David Kennedy (jurist)

David Kennedy is a legal scholar known for his work on, and criticism of, international law. Officially, he is the Manley Hudson Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and director of its European Law Research Center. He will become Vice President and professor of International Affairs for Brown University in January 2008.

David Kennedy obtained his B.A. from Brown and has a Master's degree and a PhD from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, as well as a J.D. from Harvard. He has worked for the United Nations, the European Commission and in private practice. Kennedy is also a member of Council on Foreign Relations.

He is one of the leaders of New Stream or New Approaches to International Law movement which applies Critical Legal Studies methodology to scholarship in international law. His book Dark Sides of Virtue: Reassessing International Humanitarianism (2005) offers a critique of the international human rights movement.

His other books include The Canon of American Legal Thought (edited with William Fisher, 2006), and Of War and Law (2006).
