David John Penman

David John Penman (1936 - 1989) was the 10th Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne. Born on 8 August 1936 and educated at the Universities of New Zealand and Karachi he was ordained priest in 1961[1]. His first post was as a curate at Wanganui followed by a decade of missionary work in the middle east. In 1975 he was appointed Principal of St Andrew’s Hall a CMS missionary training college in Melbourne. In 1982 he became Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese before becoming the archbishop two years later[2]. He was passionately committed to dialogue between religious traditions. He died at the age of 53 and his funeral service was held at St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne in October 1989[3].
