The son of European Seniors Tour Pro Liam Higgins, David would be the country's leading amateur by the time he reached 21. Following matchplay victories over Padraig Harrington in the finals of the South of Ireland and the Irish Amateur Close championships he decided to turn pro in 1994. He would go on to earn £67,000 in the 1996 PGA European Tour.
