David H. Bieter has served as mayor of Boise, Idaho, since 2004.
Bieter was born in Boise. He graduated from Bishop Kelly High School in Boise in 1978. Bieter earned a bachelor degree in international studies from University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) and a law degree from the University of Idaho.
A Democrat, in 1999 Bieter was appointed to the Idaho House of Representatives to succeed his late father, Pat Bieter, in the north Boise-based District 19. Bieter was elected to a full term in 2000 and reelected in 2002.
In 2003 Bieter was elected Boise mayor in a nonpartisan contest, defeating Republican Party activist Chuck Winder and Ada County Sheriff Vaughan Killeen. He was reelected in 2007 with 64 percent of the vote, defeating city councilman Jim Tibbs. Bieter is a supporter of Sen. Barack Obama in the 2008 U.S. presidential election.
Bieter is of Basque-American descent.
