David Gilbert (comic strip creator)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Gilbert, born in May 1971, is a cartoonist who created Buckles, which started in March 25, 1996.

Gilbert was born in Syracuse, New York in May, 1971. In early age, he started drawing. His first cartoon was Speedy Gonzales, which is copied off a McDonald's Warner Brothers Specialty glass.

In the next years, he read any comic strip (including Heathcliff, Family Circus, Garfield, Calvin and Hobbes, etc.) and animation books (including Disney animation books).

When Gilbert is grown up, he finds a small animation company called Animotion located in Syracuse and found himself working on animation projects for the first time.

In September, 1994, Gilbert drew the first image of a wisecracking dog named Buckles. In 1996, he began drawing Buckles comic strips to send them to comic strip syndicates. They respond him back with the interest of syndicating Buckles and chose King Features Syndicate (syndicator of comic strips such as Popeye and Betty Boop).

In March 25, 1996, Buckles first appeared in newspapers worldwide.

In 2002, Gilbert asked Plan 9 Publishing to publish three Buckles comic collections. In 2007, the books are out of stock.
