David Fung (born August 17, 1983 [1]) is an Australian pianist.

Fung enrolled in medicine at the University of New South Wales in 2002, when he also resumed his studies in piano after a considerable hiatus. Later that year, he won the Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year Award, after passing four rounds of competition which culminated in his performance of Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the Sydney Symphony during the concerto finals at the Sydney Opera House [2]. He has subsequently appeared with the major orchestras of Australia and recorded a CD with the ABC Classics label [3].

Deciding to pursue a career in music, Fung transferred in 2003 to the Colburn School in Los Angeles to study with John Perry. Fung was the first student of piano to be admitted to the Colburn Conservatory in its inaugural year; in May 2007, he became the first pianist to graduate from the Conservatory [4].

In 2005, Fung recorded his American debut album with Yarlung Records, From Hubris to Humility, which featured works by Liszt, Bach, and Ravel; his second album, Evening Conversations, released in 2006 also by Yarlung, was devoted to pieces by Mozart, Chopin, Tan Dun, Rachmaninoff, Schumann, and Domenico Scarlatti [5].

Fung has appeared at the Aspen Music Festival, the International Franz Liszt Festival, the Holland Music Sessions, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Chamber Music Society, the Music Academy of the West, and the Pan Pacific Music Festival, among others. His recitals at the 2006 Edinburgh International Festival were especially well-received [6] [7]. Major orchestras with which he has worked include the China National Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Queensland Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, Israel Philharmonic and Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa.

Besides the piano, Fung also plays the harpsichord, violin, and viola in chamber settings.
