David Choby

David Raymond Choby (born January 17, 1947) is the 11th Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese in Nashville, Tennessee.

On August 12, 2004, Pope John Paul II appointed the 10th Bishop of Nashville, Edward U. Kmiec, as the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, New York. Bishop Choby, then a priest in diocese of Nashville, was elected Diocesan Administrator by the Diocesan College of Consultors. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Nashville on December 20, 2005. Bishop Choby was consecrated and installed as Bishop of Nashville on February 27, 2006 in the Cathedral of the Incarnation. The principal consecrator was Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly of the Archdiocese of Louisville, Kentucky.

A native of Nashville, Bishop Choby attended Father Ryan High School and Aquinas College before undertaking seminary studies at St. Ambrose College and The Catholic University of America. Choby was ordained to the priesthood on September 6, 1974 by Joseph A. Durick, the 7th Bishop of Nashville. He also received a licentiate in canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome, and served for many years as a canon lawyer in the Diocese of Nashville. In addition to his ministry at various parishes, Bishop Choby taught at the Pontifical College Josephinum from 1984 to 1989, and later served as a member of the Josephinum’s Board of Trustees.
