David Carroll (actor)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
David Carroll (30 July 1950—11 March 1992) was an American actor whose last, and best remembered, role was that of Baron Felix von Gaigern in Grand Hotel. He was also sometimes billed as David-James Carroll.
Carroll was born in Rockville Center, New York, and graduated from Dartmouth College, where he was a founding member of the repertory company.
He was nominated for two Tony Awards: 1990 Best Actor in a Musical, for Grand Hotel, and 1988 Outstanding Actor in a Musical, for Chess, and for three Drama Desk Awards: 1985 Outstanding Actor in a Musical, for La Boheme; 1988 Outstanding Actor in a Musical, for Chess; 1990 Outstanding Actor in a Musical, for Grand Hotel.
Suffering from AIDS, he died of a pulmonary embolism in the bathroom of the BMG/RCA recording studio while recording the original cast album for Grand Hotel the Musical in New York City. The album had been delayed for years because of rights issues. He was replaced on the album by Brent Barrett, but was represented by a bonus track of the romantic ballad "Love Can't Happen", recorded at his cabaret performance at the 92d Street Y, on 15 February 1992 at Steve McGraw's with Wally Harper at the piano.
