He formed a duo with David Ricketts in 1985 calling themselves, David & David and recording an album, Boomtown in 1986 with a hit single "Welcome to Boomtown" that reached #37 on the Billboard charts. They disbanded in 1987 and Baerwald began his career as a solo artist. In 1990 he released his first album, Bedtime Stories which was critically acclaimed but not successful commercially and sold poorly. His second album Triage in 1993 was similarly a critical success but sold even less copies than his first album. In the years to follow he worked with other artists including Sheryl Crow.[2]
He finally released a successful album in 2002 with Mercury Records entitled, Here Comes the New Folk Underground.
