From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David B. Cohen is the current mayor of Newton, Massachusetts.[1] Cohen has been the mayor for the past eight years. He was recently reelected for a third term. Based on statistics reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Newton under Mayor Cohen's leadership was the nation's safest city during 2003, 2004 and 2005,[2] and the fourth safest city in the nation in 2006.[3] The designation is based on crime statistics in six categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and auto theft.

Legal Controversy

In January of 2007, Peter Karg, Newton's former Executive Secretary of the Election Commission, formally presented legal claims against Mayor Cohen, the City of Newton, city spokesman Jeremy Solomon, and investigator Edward Mitnick.[4]. Karg was represented by attorney Jeffrey Nichols.[5] Karg's claims stemmed in part from from Mayor Cohen's termination of Karg after the Election Commission staff miscounted during the signature certification process for a referendum petition.[6]
