Dave Campbell (footballer)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David "Dave" Martin Campbell (born in Dublin on 13 September 1969) was an Irish soccer player.

Campbell was a defender who started his career with Stella Maris F.C. in Dublin who represented Bohemians, St Patricks Athletic, Shamrock Rovers F.C., Shelbourne, Bray Wanderers and Dublin City F.C. amongst others during his career in the League of Ireland. He also had a spell on loan to Newry Town in the Irish League.

He made his league debut for Bohemians against St. Pats on New Year's Day 1989. After Bohs, he had a 2 year injury ridden spell with Huddersfield Town before returning to Dublin with Shamrock Rovers on a short term contract in 1992. After one goal in 7 appearances Campbell moved to St. Pats winning the League Title with them in 1996. He scored in the 1996 FAI Cup Final against Shelbourne and also netted in the replay but ended on the losing side as Shels won 2-1. He joined Shels later that year after a protracted transfer saga for a then domestic record fee of £20,000 and made his debut for the "Reds" against Bohs in September 1996. He avenged his Cup Final defeat the previous season by picking up a winners medal and incredibly scoring again with Shels in the 1997 FAI Cup. He was part of the Shels team that were going for the treble in 1998 and unbelievably ended up with nothing after losing the League Cup final, the FAI Cup Final and the League Title on the last day. That blow was probably softened by winning the Double with Shels in 2000.

He is one of a select band of players to have played for the "Big 4" teams in Dublin. Dave is currently the assistant manager at Shamrock Rovers [1]

His uncle is former Rovers manager Noel Campbell.
