[edit] Great Lakes Maritime Academy
The Great Lakes Maritime Academy, A division of Northwestern Michigan College , Located in Traverse City, Michigan, the Academy is situated on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay. The Great Lakes Maritime Academy offers degrees in Marine Engineering and Marine Operations; both programs are STCW and Coast Guard Approved. Graduates of the Academy will receive their Merchant Marine License as a Third Mate for the Ocean and Great Lakes with Unlimited Tonnage and also their Great Lakes Pilots License or Third Assistant Engineer of steam and motor vessels horse power unlimited.
The Great Lakes Maritime Academy is one of six state maritime academies in the United States. Between the six state academies and the United States Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point New York, they train nearly all of the United States Merchant Officers.
[edit] Affiliation With Ferris State University
Great Lakes Maritime Academy is also a partner of Ferris State University. Ferris grants an Academy graduate a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (maritime concentration), while NMC simultaneously grants an Associate's Degree in Maritime Technology. Academy enrollees who have already received a Bachelor’s Degree may choose not to complete the four-year Business Administration Degree.

The Great Lakes Maritime Academy was established in 1969 as a three year program, and became a division of the Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) in Traverse City Michigan. As it takes an act of congress to become a state maritime school, then congressmen Gerald Ford of Grand Rapids introduced the Act to the United States Congress while Senator Griffin of Traverse City introduced the same Act in the United States Senate

Spring of 1972 marked the first graduating class of six students, at that time the Academy also moved to a facility on NMC Technical Campus on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay.

The 1980s marked a period of growth for the Academy. In late 1979 early 1980 a brand new radar simulator was installed at the Academy also included in the upgrades was a new addition to the building adding office spaces for the administration and new classrooms.

In 1982 the Great Lakes Maritime Academy was the First Regional State Maritime Academy. In 1983 the Academy graduated its largest class of over 80 students.

In 1993 the academy updated it nearly 13 year old radar simulator and add a new ship handling simulator.

In 1995 a new simulator was added for the Marine Engineering Program, allowing the engineers to simulate the operations of both steam and diesel engineering plants.

In 1999 the Great Lakes Maritime Academy joined with Farris State University to allow the cadets of the Academy to receive a four degree in Business Administration when they graduate.

In the year 2000 the Academy upgraded its ship handling simulator to better meet the needs of the Great Lakes shipping industry.

In 2001 the academy upgraded its engineering plant simulators; it also became one of the first academies to meet STCW requirements.

In 2002 the Great Lakes Maritime Academy was assigned a new training vessel, the T/S State of Michigan which arrived in Traverse City, Michigan in August of 2002, also in 2002 the old maritime building was demolished to make way for a new and more modern facility.

In 2003 the Deck program at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy was approved by the United States Coast Guard to offer Third Mates Ocean License with Unlimited Tonnage.

I am working on T-AGOS articles myself and I stumbled on your talk page. I just wanted to mention the T/V Kings Pointer ex-USNS Contender (T-AGOS-2). If you are starting articles on Academy Vessels, we will cross paths occasionally. I look forward to working with you. Maybe you can help me with keeping the pages I have worked on up to date. Yesterday I started Stalwart class tactical auxiliary general ocean surveillance ships. I would like to see an Academy Vessels or Training Ships category. - I agree, Having just gotten back from sea, I am working on getting this article done and then I would be intrested in getting involved in setting up a Training ships Category, their is a lot of history. Datagen24 (talk) 01:54, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
