[edit] Characteristics
Data Drain is an ability used by several characters and monsters in The World, a fictional MMORPG. It rewrites data and has the ability to affect people in real life, such as making them fall comatose. It is generally required to "Protect Break" victims before Data Draining them.
[edit] Appearances
[edit] .hack//SIGN
Data Drain first appeared in the anime series .hack//SIGN, where it was used by Tsukasa's "guardian". When it was used on Silver Knight, he was inflicted by short-time memory loss. By the end of the series, Skeith uses Data Drain on Sora, trapping him in its red wand and making the player behind Sora fall comatose and lose his memory of ever playing the game.
[edit] .hack games
The main character of the .hack video game series, Kite, is given a "Twilight Bracelet" by Aura early in the story. This bracelet lets him perform Data Drain on monsters. Monsters are turned into a level 1 monster and the player receives either a "Virus Core" or an item. It is required to use Data Drain to defeat the normally invincible "Data Bug Monsters" (which have infinite hit-points), which lets the player obtain special "Virus Cores".
Using Data Drain in the game causes the player's "infection rate" to grow, and using Data Drain causes more severe side effects as the rate grows. The side effects range from reducing experience points to an instant game over. The game also contains a few variations of Data Drain besides the normal one:
- Drain Arc - a Data Drain on several enemies
- 2128 Drain - a Data Drain with an increased chance for gaining a rare item, and an increased growth in infection rate
- Drain Heart - a Drain 2128 that affects several enemies, also used by the Phase Corbenik
The Eight Phases bosses can also use their own Data Drain against Kite. While his Bracelet protects him and his party from falling comatose, this halves the party's HP and gives them all kinds of status effects. Corbenik, the final phase, can also use Drain Heart, which puts Kite's entire party in a coma as Kite no longer has the bracelet during the battle.
After the defeat of all Eight Phases, Aura gives the player the "Dawn Bracelet". It has the same abilities and functions of the "Twilight Bracelet", the main difference is that it hasn't formed a shadow yet.
[edit] .hack//Legend of the Twilight
In .hack//Legend of the Twilight, a manga and anime series, the main character Shugo is given a Twilight Bracelet by Aura. Shugo uses it to Data Drain without Protect Breaking, and can Data Drain other players, though without causing any serious damage.
[edit] .hack//Roots
In .hack//Roots, another anime series, the enigmatic Azure Flame Kite is capable of Data Drain, and uses it against Ovan and Haseo. While Ovan resists the attack, Haseo loses all of his levels and equipment from the Data Drain.
[edit] .hack//G.U. games
In the .hack//G.U. game series, Data Drain is available to Avatars, who are the Phases from the earlier games. The various "Epitaph Users" who control the eight Avatars can as such also use Data Drain by calling upon the power of their Avatar. When Data Drain is used against the playable Avatar, Skeith, it slowly drains his HP until the player can get him to break away from the draining.
Azure Kite, who appears in the games as well, is again capable of using Data Drain, and uses what appears to be Drain Heart on the surrounding area when healing himself.
In .hack//G.U. Vol.3//Redemption, Haseo is able to use Data Drain without transforming into Skeith.
