Middle of Start range. Suggestions for improvement:

  • Some more background
  • Better information on premiere cast and on performances outside the USA
  • Synopsis consists mostly of enormous paragraphs - needs reworking
  • Notable arias, etc., need to be shown, preferably where they occur in the synopsis
  • More on the music
  • Needs one or more illustrations
  • Needs inline references (and more of them) rather than a short list of sources

Lower Start range (30 on the points scale). I agree with all the points made by GuillaumeTell above. Also:

  • Needs a fuller recording section.
  • Needs checking against main opera references such as Grove.
  • Synopsis probably needs checking against an actual libretto.

Until recent work on Die Feen, this was the most informative of the articles on the early Wagner operas. For example, the editors did well to include a synopsis, which the other articles lacked. However, it is still obviously a work in progress. The following marking scheme gives an indication of where improvements can be made towards the next grade.

  • Background 5/15 - Has composition date. Could do with more information about composition, no mention of Italianate influences etc.
  • Performance history 10/15 A good summary. I suggest adding a mention that it is not part of the Bayreuth canon and finding reviews of the American premiere which has now taken place.
  • Tabulated role 4/5. Good to have included this. If you can find the full names of the singers at the premiere, it would get that last mark.
  • Synopsis 7/10. The first of the early operas to get one. I would agree with the comments above.
  • Notable arias 0/5. I can't see any mention of these. For Die Feen,I was able to use aria.com to confirm that the likely candidates were so identified.
  • Music/critical appreciation, discussion of the music 3/15. The influence of Weber is important, but I've seen mention of Italianate influences. Searching for CD and performance reviews online should come up with some information on critical persepctives. Grive should also have some comments.
  • Recordings: 3/10 Mentions the best known recording, but others exist. Would be useful also to indicate conductors of the overture.
  • Illustrations: 0/10 I don't know about the availability of legal pictures of the opera itself. I've put in Die Feen a copy of a picture of Wagner at around the time of composition of the early operas. To get to the highest grades, some musical sampling will be desirable, but check Wikipedia's policy on fair use and having minimal sound quality and short duration of extracts before you add any.
  • Referencing 4/15. Two good solid sources. To get to GA and above, inline referencing is required. It is helpful to later editors if it is clear from the beginning what sources provided which facts.
  • Total 34/100. Lower Start Grade.
