Das (Hindi: दास, Urdu: داس, Punjabi: ਦਾਸ داس, Bengali: দাস / দাশ, Assamese: দাস) is a common Hindu and Sikh surname/last name in India and Bangladesh. In India, the surname is common among the people of the North and East. They generally belong to the Brahmin caste in Punjab, the Baidya or Kayastha castes in Bihar[citation needed] and Bengal, to Rajputs, Kayastha, or a variety of upper castes in Orissa[citation needed] and Vaishnavites or followers of Srimanta Sankardeva in Assam.[citation needed] The surname is also found amongst the Dutch of Holland.
