[edit] Plot
Reborn! is about a boy, Tsunayoshi "Tsuna" Sawada, who is chosen to become a mob boss. Tsuna unwillingly undergoes training from Reborn, a hitman from Italy. Timoteo a.k.a. "Vongola IX," the head of the Vongola Family, sent Reborn to train Tsuna; the first Vongola boss moved to Japan, and Tsuna was his great-great-great grandson; the other candidates for the position of the head of the Vongola family died. Enrico, who was the leading candidate to become "Vongola X", died in a gun battle. Massimo, the second, "sleeps with the fishes." Federico, the favored son, was found as a pile of bones. For these reasons, Tsuna is the only remaining heir.
Reborn's main instrument of choice in teaching Tsuna is the "Dying Will Bullet" ("Deathperation Shot" in the English versions), which will make the person be "reborn" with a stronger self intent on fulfilling his dying will.
[edit] Setting
The Reborn! series takes place in a fictional town called Namimori Town (並盛町 Namimori Machi?) during modern Japan; a majority of the town's buildings and structures have the name "Namimori": Namimori Hospital, Namimori Shrine, Namimori High, etc. However, despite it taking place in Japan, the series mostly centers around the Italian Mafia, with a majority of the secondary characters, including some enemies, being from Italy.
In the series, mention of the Mafia is initially used for a comedic effect, but it later enters into a serious and darker tone after the introduction of the Kokuyō Junior High Gang at the beginning of the second story arc. Since the series' primary genre is comedy, the story still has its comedic moments, but as it evolves, the lead character, Tsunayoshi "Tsuna" Sawada, begins to take his duties as a Mafia boss more seriously rather than constantly avoiding anything that had to do with the Mafia.
[edit] Mafia families and organizations
[edit] Mafia families
- Vongola Famiglia (ボンゴレファミリー Bongore Famirī?)
- The Vongola Family is the first Mafia family introduced in the series since the main protagonist, Tsunayoshi Sawada, is being groomed to be the Vongola's tenth generation boss. The Vongolas holds the status as the leading Mafia family in the series, and is considered to be the strongest and most influential family since the beginning of the Mafia underground.[2]
- "Vongola" means "clam", and "Famiglia" means "family" in Italian.
- Chiavorone Famiglia (キャバッロネファミリー Kyabarrone Famirī?)
- The Chiavorone Family is the number three family in its mafia alliance with the Vongola Family. The family is one of the largest, with 5,000 members at its disposal.[3]
- Tomaso Famiglia
- A rival family to the Vongola Family. They have opposed the Vongola Family ever since the beginning of the Mafia underground. During the second generation, the Tomaso Family waged a battle against the Vongolas (the outcome was not mentioned). The Tomaso Family's bosses are always named Longchamp.[4]
- During the series' Future arc, it is revealed that they have become an ally of the Vongola Family.
- Millefiore Famiglia
- The Millefiore Family is the Mafia family that is engaged in battle against the Vongola Family in the Future arc. It is actually a merger of two families, the Gesso Family and the Giglio Nero Family. The leader, Byakuran, has made a great deal of effort to eliminate every single one of the Vongola Family's members and allies. It is not known exactly when, but the Millefiore has overpowered the Vongola, and still aims to eliminate its remaining members.
- "Millefiore" roughly translates into "Thousands of Flowers" in Italian.
- The above families are the Mafia families that have major roles in the series. Though there are other Mafia families, their significance and impact in the story are only minor. Some of these minor crime families include:
- Estraneo Famiglia
- The Estraneo Family is the crime family that created the Possession Bullet. However, the bullet was deemed forbidden by the rest of the Mafia due to the harmful effects it had on the user. They were then ostracized by the rest of the Mafia, and the members that were found were gunned down. In order to reclaim their former glory, they experimented on children, hoping to create powerful weapons. One of the children, Mukuro Rokudo, ended up killing his captors and offered Chikusa Kakimoto and Ken Joshima freedom.[5]
- Bovino Famiglia
- The Bovino Family is a low-level Mafia family in Italy. Lambo is the only known member of the Bovino Family.
- "Bovino" means "cow" in Italian.
- Todd Famiglia
- The Todd Family is the Mafia family that chases Fūta for his ranking abilities. The only three members revealed are Rossie, Paulo, and Enzo.[6]
- Gospela Famiglia
- The Gospela Family is a Mafia family that intrudes on Dino's turf, and sells guns to punks, causing innocent people to be hurt.[7]
- Momokyokai
- The Momokyokai is a Yakuza group that controls the area around Tsuna's home. They are severely beaten by Tsuna and Dino.
[edit] Organizations
- Arcobaleno
- Arcobaleno is a group of the seven strongest infants in the Mafia. Each member has a pacifier colored as one of the colors of the rainbow.
- Arcobaleno means rainbow in Italian.
- Vendicare
- Also known as the Revengers. They are the proclaimed judges of the Mafia. In order to keep "law and order" within the Mafia world, they judge mafia criminals that cannot be judged by the law.[5]
- CEDEF
- A group headed by Iemitsu Sawada, who is an Outside Advisor. An Outside Advisor is technically not an official member of any single Mafia family, but during times of crises, the Outside Advisor has the power of the family's second-in-command.[8]
- Cervello (チェルベッロ Cheruberro?)
- Cervello is an organization consisting of women who all seem to look exactly the same and whose names are not known. Their allegiance is unknown and they are are usually hired by Mafia families for a price.
- The name Cervello can be translated as 'brain'.
[edit] Terminology
[edit] Special abilities
- Dying Will Flame
- A form of energy that is hidden inside one's body. Depending on the person, the flame can be transferred into objects and can be used in many others ways. Unless one is shot with the Dying Will Bullet, it is rare for someone to control/summon the flame on their own.
[edit] Special weapons and items
[edit] Magic bullets
In the Reborn! world, various Mafia crime families have created their own special bullets, each one having different effects on a person.
A few of those bullets include:
- Dying Will Bullet ("Deathperation Shot" is the Viz translation)
-
- First used in Volume 01 – Target 001
- Belongs to the Vongola Family.
- When shot with the Dying Will Bullet, the target is filled with grief about their dying wish and is instantly revitalized with temporary increased strength, speed, energy, and courage. When the effect is done, the person is returned to normal as if they were never shot. However, if an individual is shot with the Dying Will Bullet, yet have no regrets upon dying, they will remain dead as if shot by a normal bullet, thus will not be "Reborn", as they are already prepared to die.
- For more details on the effects of the Dying Will Bullet, see Vongola Family bullets.
- Desolation Bullet
-
- First used in Volume 06 – Target 044
- Belongs to the Tomaso Family.
- When shot with the Desolation Bullet, the person will be revived, but will then outwardly grieve about all the terrible things that have happened in their life, making others feel sorry for them.
- Possession Bullet
-
- First used in Volume 09 – Target 075
- Belongs to the Estraneo Family.
- When shot by the Possession Bullet, the person will be able to possess the body of another person. To use it, a person is required to have a strong will, or else they will die from the shot. When successful, they will be able to completely possess another person's body (different from simple mind control). Although, since its use was considered inhumane, it was deemed forbidden by the rest of the Mafia, and was dubbed as the Forbidden Bullet.
- Rebuke Bullet
-
- First used in Volume 09 – Target 078
- Created by Reborn's pet, Leon. It was specially made for Tsuna, due to his growth as Reborn's student.
- When shot by the Rebuke Bullet, a person is able to hear people's rebukes (criticism by others). Also, rather than removing a person's body limiters externally, it awakens their hidden willpower; internally removing their body limiters. It also removes the limiters on a person's internal senses. Although, unlike the Dying Will Bullet, the Rebuke Bullet allows a person to apply their strength more calmly and wisely. They conserve energy and accurately expels it against others in a more sharp manner.
[edit] Mafia rings and boxes
[edit] Rings
The Mafia rings are two sets of seven invaluable rings belonging to the Vongola and Millefiore families. The Vongola Rings are the first set of rings mentioned in the series; its existence having been known since the beginning of the Varia arc. On the other hand, the Millefiore Rings are not mentioned until the Future arc. Both sets are believed to have been created nearly four hundred years ago.
During the Future arc, it is revealed that there are minor rings besides the main rings. Though not as powerful as the main rings, each minor ring has a different special ability.
[edit] Boxes
Every Mafia ring can also transform into a type of weapon when used with a special box. The idea behind the boxes was to create weapons that were modeled after life forms found in nature. The boxes were created by using the 343 design drawings left by biologist Geppetto Lorenzini four centuries ago. However, at the time, there was no technology to reproduce them, so for a long time, those design drawings had been kept in storage. That is until Innocenti, Koenig, and Verde, three members of the secret society which stored them, rediscovered them. In just five years, they were able to reproduce prototype boxes, which were powered by the rings' flame. After completing those 343 original boxes, they continued their research, and were eventually able to create new types of boxes. These new type of boxes were designed for preservation, storage, or to hold new weapons that were created by them. Unfortunately, the research took a lot of money, so the scientists sold boxes to the Mafia for low prices in order to continuously fund their research. Eventually, both Verde and Innocenti died, and Koenig, who stayed alive, went underground and even now is said to still be creating them and trading them as an arms dealer.[10]
The boxes are charged by the ring's flame and their attack will stop when the flame dies. However, some boxes, once opened, produce weapons that are surrounded by the flames. There are also types that absorb an opponent's flames to become more powerful, as well as boxes that store flame for later use. The boxes have also been revealed to become more stable when they are customized.
To open a box, three things must harmonize: the user's wave energy, the ring, and the box; the ring's and box's type must match. However, Tsuna is special because he possesses the sky wave energy, enabling him to open any box so long as he holds a sky class ring, though he still cannot draw out all the power of the boxes which belong to a different attribute. According to Lal Mirch, sky wave energy is extremely rare to have, and sky attribute boxes have been indicated to also be very rare.[10]
Little is known about the true purpose of the boxes, but Kyoya states that 'coincidence' created the boxes, and that the more he has been investigating them, the deeper the mystery has become.[10]
