[edit] Introduction

Well, my real name is Joel Ong, and I will gladly use most Operating Systems EXCEPT for SCO/Caldera and Windows. To see more information about me, go here.

[edit] Linux

If you're interested in the Open-source movement, welcome! Linux is one of the most famous examples of open-source collaboration, with many variants that all use the same base kernel developed by Linus Torvalds. If you're interested in Linux, I recommend Fedora Core (personally my favourite) or SuSE Linux, if you prefer an environment that is more user-friendly. Alternatively, if you have a slow download speed or a short fuse, you may be interested in Damn Small Linux, which is Linux in a nutshell, designed to be compact, portable and fully functional.

[edit] Mac OS X

If Linux ain't your cup of tea, then I suggest that you get a Mac. OS X has been touted as the "most advanced operating system in the world" for a good reason. It offers flexibility, functionality and user-friendliness that you won't be able to find anywhere else. It supports Python, C, C++, Java and many other programming languages, and also supports UNIX-style shell scripts, AND its own scripting language, AppleScript. And since it's based on Unix, it crashes about as much as a hot water bottle.

[edit] Geek code

[edit] What is it?

the Geek Code ([1]) is a code that geeks like me can use to not only introduce themselves but to share lots of data about each other. In true geek style, it condenses everything into geek-readable shorthand!
