Darkpower is a fanfiction author that has written many Sailor Moon fanfictions, including Unnecessary Punishment, Got There Too Late, and the Cartoon Wrestling Entertainment series. He is also a regular Wikicontributer.

[edit] Fanfiction Works
[edit] Early Works
Darkpower's writing first began with an "underground" fanfiction (his own term) named "Sailor Moon '99", a script-format fanfiction that while controversial in the grammer specification, had garnered a cult-like following.
[edit] The CWE
The CWE, or Cartoon Wrestling Entertainment is a crossover of World Wrestling Entertainment and several Japanese anime. Even though the series has as down times (called "hiatuses"), the series is set as having historical roots far beyond what was written.
[edit] Unnecessary Punishment
This fanfiction was Darkpower's first fortay into book-style formatted fanfiction. The plot centers around Queen Beryl, ten years following an unexplained rebuilt of the Moon Kingdom and resurrection of Queen Serenity (the rebuilt was to be explained in Darkpower's prequel series "Of Generals And Brothers", but that fanfiction is currently abandoned after one chapter being sreleased). Sanikite, a created character for the Dark Kingdom and Beryl's lover in the story, and Beryl have a four year old daughter named Ashely Beryl (earlier versions of this story name her "Seryl" for a name rhyming scheme). A High Crimes Court on the Moon Kingdom abducts Ashely as an arrest for Queen Beryl (who is given the name "Melissa Beryl" in this and other Darkpower stories) for her destruction of the Moon Kingdom. Created chracter Carl Reinheart sentences the found guilty Beryl to watch him execute Ashely (hense the title). Created character Casto Sommers also appears and is given a key role in this story as the blood brother of Serena/Usagi, although this appears to be the only completed story outside of the CWE and Sailor Moon '99 stories that Casto appears. This remains one of the few stories that appears to be mainly sympathetic of Beryl's position, with the narroration speaking in a way that makes Beryl the victim.
This story had debuted in 1999, and has since been given numerous revisions, the latest being the change of the daughter's name to Ashely Beryl, mainly due to Ashely appearing in the CWE as Melissa Beryl's daughter, as well as to eliminate the name-rhyming tactic from the fanfic. Queen Beryl's full name was Michelle Beryl in early versions, but was changed to also coincide with other Darkpower fanfictions.
[edit] Got There Too Late
A controversial, out of character, self-imposed fanfiction with Minako/Sailor Venus acting as a fan of Darkpower's work, acting as a songfic to Eminem's "Stan". Darkpower implies that he wanted for this fanfiction to be exactly similar to the song in every sense it could, including the self-imposing (Eminem is the subject and recipient of "Stan's" letters in the song), the crazed actions of the fan, and the level-headed response of the recipient. Notherless, this was referred to as a "crapfic," even though, despite Darkpower's defense of his intentions, Darkpower says that he doesn't mind the label for the fanfic because he didn't intend for the fanfiction to be a serious work, instead being something that was thought up of in a whim.
It's interesting to note that Darkpower held a firm grudge against the original labeler, a controversial Sailor Moon fanfiction critic christening herself as "The Fic Bitch" for about five years following the initial label of the fanfic (another DP fanfic had suffered a similar fate), citing his disapproval of MSTs of fanfiction and that such criticism is anti-productive, despite the opposing viewpoint that the Fic Bitch's style is more in the way of using harsh sarcasm. However, Darkpower has seemed to let go of his grudge by posting a new web blog on his web site on August 31th, 2007, in response to her rant about copyright laws, in which he holds agreement on many points, though also taking disagreement with a few points (these disagreements appear to be unrelated to any personality conflicts and are instead only a normal difference of opinion).
[edit] Cleaning Out Her Closet
Another Eminem songfic, "Cleaning Out My Closet", this time only using lines from the song where appropriate, once again focuses on Queen Beryl, this time in first person (the first regular formatted first person story that Darkpower has written), telling of her true intentions and reasons for her actions. The story is another Darkpower writing that is sympathetic of Beryl (although it is from Beryl's point of view, it is written in a way to show that Beryl has concious, was forced and/or talked into her actions, and felt guilty about what she had committed). Unlike Got There Too Late, which was not to be taken seriously, this was written with a serious intent, as more editing work was done on this fiction than the former songfic.
[edit] Fight For Your Rights
To coincide with a MTV movie chronologies the brutal death of Matthew Shepard, Darkpower wrote this story about Haruka and Michiru in the commonwealth of Virginia to search for the pure heart when they come across two homophobic men that they save before the men hear the two talk as if they were lovers. The two are later a victim of an assault by the men in a way that renders the two defenseless. The story was been revised for errors in correct epithets and continuity errors. Although Darkpower is strict on the MSTing of his stories, he has explicatively refused to let anyone MST this particular story.
[edit] Black Angel
Currently Darkpower's only other readily available fanfic that is nowhere in the Sailor Moon fandom, instead in the Kim Possible fandom, and despite no new entries within the past year in the miniseries, Darkpower claims a second chapter is being worked on. The story has Kim Possible fighting an inner evil entity that talks to her through her dreams and gives her random violent tendencies and thoughts. Meanwhile, Drakken and Shego devise a plan to use an uncharted volcano as a way to blackmail the world to give in to his demands, even though Shego secretly develops a phobia for the volcano that grows more serious as the fiction goes along. This is Darkpower's most current published work.
[edit] Deadworld (Work in Progress)
A recently released project, and one that Darkpower had announced with intention of hyping the idea. The first chapter was recently released (and more recently revised in order to correct several overseen errors), with the second chapter announced to be released within a few weeks. The idea is based off of a Final Fantasy VI plot twist in which Kefka unbalanced the world into ruin by moving the magical statues out of their proper alignment.
In Deadworld, this is accomplished in a different way. The story begins 10 years after the Sailor Moon R storyline, even though after the R storyline ended, the canon that leads to the beginning of Deadworld takes a drastic turn (including the reappearance of Rubeus, the Moon Kingdom's revival and truth behind what the events leading up to its destruction was, and personal hardships of the Sailors being changed and new challenges arising). The most drastic change, however, is Queen Beryl's realignment with the Sailors after being resurrected by Rubeus, thinking that he would have her help in his evil plans but instead making her rethink her alignment once Rubeus does things that are too evil to her.
Queen Metallia is the main antagonist of the story. Metallia, along with her exclusive Youma, a giant flying beast called Ultimagama, lay waste to the world, the Sailors being separated and losing their powers. Similar to Final Fantasy VI's Celes after the plot twist in the game, Beryl awakes after a year long coma to find the world she knew wasted, everything known about the world changed, and with Metallia ruling the world with near unlimited power.
The fanfiction is in the same "half-Alternate Universe" canon as Moon Kingdom. Many of the events that are talked about in Deadworld and some origins are within the same canon as Moon Kingdom will be, and will be a halfway introduction to some of these storyline elements, making them so readers of the upcoming Moon Kingdom will not be lost. However, some of the elements of his previous canons are included. Some of these include:
- Casto returns as Serena's brother and Sailor Vulture, even though the origins of his powers are finally explained in the first chapter.
- The Chameleons, a group of thieves, made their first appearance in a DP "mainstream" fanfiction (they were introduced in Sailor Moon '99, though in a much different aspect). DP has said that a Chameleon's name was altered so it didn't coincide with a popular hate group ("Skinhead" will be changed into "Cuehead"). All other names will remain the same. Also, one of the elements about the Chameleons was carried over in that one member is unsure about their place.
- Some of the names of the Sailor Moon '99 characters will return, but used to name unrelated monsters and people. It is unclear whether any of the other elements from that fanfiction will return for Deadworld.
- The idea of "Uncontrolled Youmas" returned from Of Generals And Brothers. This is the idea of a Youma being magically controlled by the person giving them orders, in order to suppress their more powerful, evil, and more dangerous powers and intentions. This is used to describe what Metallia does to Ultimagama in order to allow him to make his own dreams a reality (to destroy the world).
- From Cleaning Out Her Closet, as well as elements from a fanfiction that he was able to get permission to use some elements of for that fanfiction, the underlying that Queen Serenity had an ulterior motive for not allowing Beryl to become a part of the Silver Millennium Project. This is also the first time of the Project being talked about as being no more than a failure.
NOTE: Even though it's technically a carry over in Beryl having a love interest, the person she is in love with has changed in this version of the canon. Thus, this is also technically not a complete carry over.
[edit] Announced Works in Progress
Darkpower had announced a few projects for the future:
[edit] Moon Kingdom
One of the most hyped of the upcoming projects. The story is set 100 years prior to the destruction of the Silver Millennium. The continuity is changed slightly to fit the storyline. Queen Serenity sanctions the Peace Corps (which would be later renamed the Sailor Sensei/Soilders), with approval of the bipartial Silver Millennium Council, in a desperate attempt to accomplish her dream of 1000 years of peace. The story is set to focus mainly on the members of the Peace Corps, even though the secondary characters get as much focus.
[edit] Haunted History (tentative title)
A story that deals with a person obsessed with the dropping of the Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima during the end of World War II. Darkpower hasn't given much public information about this fanfiction.
[edit] Canceled works
As of right now, there is one work that DP had announced that had since been either abandoned or announced as canceled.
[edit] Artemis' Lover
One of the most controversial projects announced, even though this one has become all be abandoned. Announced as a possible remake of the controversial Oscar hentai fanfiction of the same name that was published in 1997. It was once reported to have a similar but not the same story. It was also thought of to have a completely different story altogether.
[edit] DP's Sailor Moon Canon
Not unlike some other fanfiction authors, Darkpower has used several elements from his other Sailor Moon fanfictions more than once. However, he has put these elements into a timeline that sets up a canon for Sailor Moon that is somewhat different than the original storyline of the manga or anime. Although he does not refer to this as an alternate universe storyline, it depicts a much different way of how certain elements of the main storyline came about, while adding new elements that could change perceptions of several storylines in the main canon, thus making them deviations and expansions to what has been introduced already, such as characters that were never given a background, elements from other mediums that weren't seen by the general public that could prove to be significant, and new elements that expand and change the outlook of characters.
[edit] Views and Targets
[edit] MSTs
Darkpower had been known to be a firm critic of the MST fanfiction style, citing his own issues with a MST of a that he did not approve of (he had approved of a past MST of his work and had worked with the author to create the former MST). He had said that while he had no problem with satire on his fanfics (taking the "any publicity is good publicity" approach of free advertising), the fanfiction that was satired (Fight For Your Rights) was one he was not willing to approve of due to the "serious nature" of the subject matter the fanfic dealt with (homophobia). He has, however, relaxed this viewpoint, although he is still skeptical that MST is a pro-productive form of criticism.
[edit] The RIAA and the MPAA
He has, since 2005, taken a firm stance against the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their takedown notices of lyric sites having an effect of fanfiction sites and their policies of songfics. He later made a blog in which he makes scathing opinions about the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for their takedown notices about using their ratings system to rate fanfiction on many sites (Darkpower currently uses the television ratings system to rate his fanfiction). A banner for the Electronic Frontier Foundation appears on nearly every page on his personal website.
[edit] Anne Rice
In the aforementioned web blog about The Fic Bitch's stance on copyrights, he also took a shot against Anne Rice for her refusal to allow fanfictions of her works to be archived, saying:
“ | Simply put, fanfiction could be considered "Nominative use", and thus protected under that fair use doctrine (are you listening, Anne Rice? FFN and other archives don't necessarily HAVE to remove fics that your ugly, cowardly ass doesn't like because of the Nominative use clause). | ” |
However, he has since began to label Anne Rice as a "fanfiction terrorist", and a recent blog was dedicated to the controversy, which includes accusations that she had threatened other fanfiction authors that did not write in the related fandoms. He ended the blog with:
“ | Basically put, I'm speaking for the rest of the fanfiction world that has had it with you. We have had it with you, the copyright police that ignore any law that puts them in the disadvantage, your threats, lies, deceit, and of you claiming to found God when the god you found is certainly not the same God we would be believed to think you found. You need to make apologies and you must make them today, while there is still breath in your fading career, before your god falls, and before someone can take that final stake to the heart of your heart has the opportunity to finally put you to rest. Either give us the right to defend ourselves and give your so-called fans the respect they really deserve, or just go away.
Us fanfiction writers have more important things to worry about, more important things to give our love to, more important things to perfect our craft on, than you. |

[edit] Other Targets
DP's site displayed a banner across the bottom of the index page concerning a nationwide known case out of Wheeling, West Virginia (his birth town), of a man that abducted and sexually assaulted a eleven year old girl before leaving her for dead, showing the composite sketch of the man and asking people to call the FBI or police if anyone has seen the man depicted. This is the same banner that is displayed on the website for WTRF, the CBS Affiliate in that market. DP has also made reference to the importance of finding the man responsible with every update to his index page.
On December 21st, 2007, it was reported that the man responsible for that abduction, Joshua Michael Ridings, was captured and linked by DNA to the Wheeling case and a similar case in Kentucky. Since then, the banner has been taken down due to the abductor being found.
