The Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is an orchestra based in Darwin, Australia.


The Darwin Symphony Orchestra is the Northern Territory's only symphony orchestra for 17 years. The first concert of the DSO took place in 1989. The Orchestra is funded by the Northern Territory Government and support from private corporations and donors including the Charles Darwin University. The Symphony has over 75 musicians and its Artistic Director and Conductor Martin Jarvis.


The DSO performs throughout the Territory with about 8 concerts a year.[1]ABC has produced a documentary on the DSO titled Have Orchestra, Will Travel which was broadcasted both nationally and overseas.

Since 1990, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra has performed throughout the Territory, which includes Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Glen Helen Gorge, Groote Eylandt, Nhulunbuy and Jabiru. The Orchestra has performed with renowned artists such as John Williams, James Blundell and Wendy Matthews. The DSO was twice presented with the National Australia Day Community Event of the Year Award. In 1995 the DSO received the award for Outstanding Contribution to Australian Culture from the Centre of Australian Cultural Research. In 2000 The Darwin Symphony Orchestra was presented by TOAN (The Orchestras of Australia Network) with the award for a community orchestra
