[edit] Character history
Darren grew up in Hollyoaks with his parents Celia and Jack Osborne and older sister Ruth. He was best friends with Max Cunningham. When Celia discovered that Jack had had an affair with Max's sister and Ruth's best friend Dawn Cunningham, she went to live in America and took Darren with her.
Darren returned to live with his father at "The Dog in the Pond" pub a few years later. By now he and Max had grown apart, but Darren immediately became a friend of Luke Morgan as they both shared the love of football. At the same time, Darren and Ruth embroiled themselves in something of a family feud with the Patricks, who were also living under Jack's roof.
Darren displayed the bigoted side of his personality when he discovered that Gina Patrick was gay, but his personality went from bad to worse when he found out that Luke had been raped. He decided to take the opportunity to steal Luke's girlfriend Mandy Richardson off him, and even started hanging around with Luke's attacker – Mark Gibbs.
[edit] Return
When Darren left Hollyoaks to go back to America, he left behind a lot of broken friendships and ill-feeling. After four years, Darren decided to make a dramatic return in Hollyoaks and he was all set to cause trouble back in the town. When Dan Hunter was sent to prison, he broke up with his girlfriend, Debbie Dean. Confused and heartbroken, Debbie turned to Darren and the pair grew closer as the weeks went on. The pair finally slept together, however, as Darren confessed his love for her, she revealed that she was still obviously in love with Dan after accidentally replying with "I love you too Dan". Darren then broke up with Debbie.
He also had a relationship with Debbie's younger sister (and Darren's future step-sister) Steph Dean until she had a fit due to her epilepsy and Darren dumped her.
He broke step-brother Craig's heart by sleeping with his girlfriend Darlene to prove what type of person she was. Darren also began provoking Jake Dean over the situation with Becca Hayton and Justin Burton. Darren eventually pushed Jake too far and was almost punched by him. However, Jake missed and hit Jack instead. When a fire occurred in the Dog on September 8, Darren valiantly tried to fight it, but to no avail. Since Steph's dalliance with fame, Darren became her agent, although he was rather incompetent and kept a large wad of Steph's earnings for himself. He was even fired by little Tom Cunningham for being so awful.
[edit] Darren's (temporary) softer side,Zoe, and Zak
Darren made friends with Zoe Carpenter, after she apologised for slapping him across the face, even though he had been making a joke of her situation with Will. She was impressed to hear him telling baby Charlie a story, and he cheered her up by making her laugh about the Will situation. He has since began having a major crush on Zoe, even admitting his feelings to Jake, and sacking Rhys Ashworth after he insulted her on his first shift. Darren got mugged recently and Zak Ramsey helped him. Darren later found out that Zak still had feelings for Zoe, so Darren put his feelings on hold, possibly as Zak is someone Darren seems to get along with.
Darren persuades and counsels Zak on how to get Zoe but his attempts are in vain as Zoe is in love with someone else. She tells Zak of her feelings for Darren which makes him very upset. He later tells Darren that Zoe likes him but Darren claims Zoe was probably drinking and it was the drink talking. Later, Zoe confronts him and tries to kiss him but he breaks away, he is mates with Zak and doesn't want to ruin that.
Zak later sends Zoe and Darren on a date which goes well for both of them and sees their relationship blossom.
However, Darren and Zoe's relationship eventually ends, when, after several fights about his gambling addiction, Darren sleeps with Zoe's best friend Jess.
[edit] Support for Craig
Rather surprisingly, he was the only family member, apart from Steph, who supported his step-brother's relationship with John-Paul, however, Darren is not above making snide remarks to the pair about their situation.
When Craig left for Dublin, Darren told him that he is his brother just like Jake. He told him that he respected him and not to worry what anybody thinks. They embraced and said good-bye.
[edit] Fostering
When Jack and Frankie decided to foster children they only told Darren on the day Daisy, the foster child, arrived. Darren vocally opposed the idea and treated Daisy unkindly. After a short time, Daisy returned to her family. Then, a troubled teenage boy named Newt arrives. They share much dislike and cruel insults, culminating in Darren framing Newt for stealing Frankie's (foster mum) jewellery. Newt is sent away. Newt comes back. Somehow Newt and Darren are more friendly towards each other.
[edit] Jessica Harris
On Friday the 23rd of November, Darren slept with his girlfriend's best friend Jessica Harris. The pair had some luck at a casino, which led to a steamy encounter on the pool table at the Dog. They later slept together again after they had another win at the casino. Zoe found out as Kris accidentally pressed the 'on air' button when he and Jess had an argument about it in the radio station. Zoe has now split from Darren and is getting her revenge on her ex-best mate.
[edit] Gambling Addiction
Darren's gambling addiction causes him more and more pain. He arranges to have money stolen from the Dog that he can then pocket from the thief (Ste Hay), with Ste getting a small cut while Darren pockets the rest (and insurance covers the Dog's loss). When the loan shark threatened to harm Zoe if Darren did not pay up, Darren steals and pawns Frankie's jewellery. When Frankie notices some of her rings were missing, Darren puts some of her jewellery in Newt's room, causing Newt to be sent back to care. Jack, having no idea what Darren is doing, tells Darren he is proud of him and gives him half the Dog in recognition of how much he has grown up.
When Zoe agrees to accompany Darren to counselling to help his gambling addiction they hold hands, though Zoe is doing it only to be supportive. Afterwards Darren tries to kiss her but she rebuffs him before he accuses her of playing mind games. Darren then ends up playing a serious poker game with Warren (with Jess on his side) after Mike Barnes and Tony Hutchinson drop out and it causes Darren to lose his fifty percent of The Dog In The Pond to Warren after Warren decided to up the ante and make it The Dog In The Pond vs. The Loft. Darren begs Warren to change his mind, but Warren refuses. Meanwhile, Carmel buys a ring that Frankie recognises as her own, and Frankie goes to the pawn shop to look at the security tapes. When Darren comes home, Jack and Frankie begin berating him for stealing the jewellery and blaming Newt. As he tries to tell them he will get the money, Warren walks into the Dog with Louise and tells them he is now co-owner. Jack goes upstairs and has a heart attack; Darren is the one who finds him. Darren feels guilty for his father's attack and when Jack comes to, Darren promises his father he will do whatever it takes to get the Dog back. Jack says he wants nothing more to do with Darren. Darren is distraught and slumps on a bench for the night. Warren passes and tries to get Darren into even more trouble by saying he will sell Darren his half of the Dog back if Darren can come up with ₤100,000 within 48 hours. Knowing he has no money Darren asks Jess if she can lend him any, but she refuses. They both notice Louise drunkenly returning to Warren's flat and help her up the stairs. Darren then spots the week's takings from the Evissa (₤3000 to be exact). Darren and Jess take the money to the casino in a last ditch attempt to win back the pub, but Darren loses most of the money very quickly until he puts the remainder of the cash on a bet and wins ₤20,000. Darren then puts the money on an accumulator bet and wins again making ₤200,000. Excited and on top of the world Jess starts talking about what they can spend the winnings on. Darren says he isn't going to spend any of the money with her. He says he will buy back the Dog for his father and try to patch things up with Zoe. Darren returns to the pub and with one last showdown between himself and Warren he realises that the money has been replaced. Meanwhile Jess makes her exit in a taxi £200,000 richer.
Darren ends up living on the streets after being kicked out by the Osbornes. Newt helps Darren to film Warren attacking Darren with the intention of blackmailing him into giving up The Dog in the Pond. But Warren is not so easily intimidated.
Eventually, after a talk with Newt, Jack decides to forgive Darren and let him move back in with the family. Things seem to be improving until Darren overhears Jack and Frankie say half-jokingly that they wish he would move out, which causes his jealousy of Newt to flare up. After being taunted by Darren, Newt plants some of Jack's money on him to make Jack believe he is still a thief, and Darren is once more thrown out of his home.
[edit] Hostages at the Dog
Jack, Frankie, Newt and Louise were held hostage at the Dog by two criminals relating to Warren. Outside, Darren fights with the police to try and get inside to save his father. When they do get out, they take Jack and Louise at gun point, before throwing them to the floor. Jack attacks one of the criminals and Darren goes to his defense. While they are fighting Darren gets shot by the other hostage taker, before the other drove off.
[edit] Addiction Relapse
On the 26th May 2008, Darren went to the casino with £100,000, hoping to double it to £200,000. On 27th May 2008, it was revealed he had lost the whole £100,000 overnight. When Jack found out that he had been at the casino, Darren lied and said he only lost £500.
