Darksol is an antagonist of the Shining Force series, a videogame series produced by Sega and developed by Camelot Software Planning, but also made appearances in Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention, Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict (for Game Gear), Shining Soul (for Game Boy Advance), and Shining Force: Resurrection of Dark Dragon (a remake of Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention for Game Boy Advance). In Shining in the Darkness there is a "Dark Sol", also known as Mephisto and Melvyl. This is not the same Darksol as in Shining Force, but rather his son. It is apparent (as shown at the end of Final Conflict) that Mephisto is the child of Darksol, and that Mishaela, one of Darksol's minions, is probably the mother. Darksol's name is a combination of the words "Dark" and "sol", which means "sun".

[edit] Fictional biography
Darksol's background and motives are almost unknown in Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention, where the character makes his first appearances. It is only in Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon that a new perspective is provided for the antagonist.
[edit] Background
Darksol is an Ancient, a race of individuals with greater knowledge and wisdom who are often called "Gods" in the Shining series. They are not actually deities, however, and they can be killed just as humans can. They also have human-like appearances. The Ancients were responsible for the creation of other intelligent races, including humans, elves, centaurs, birdmen and dwarves (but not including devils).
However, the Ancients feared that someday these races would become more powerful than themselves and rebel against them. To protect themselves, they also created Dark Dragon, an immensely powerful monster, which looked like a three-headed, skeletal dragon, but their creation, was incomplete: it lacked a soul. Darksol, one of the Ancients, was chosen to become Dark Dragon's soul. He paid a high price for the honor: all his past memories were erased, in order to eliminate all purpose on his life except to be the monster's soul.
To their misfortune, Darksol despised the Ancients for doing this to him. After merging with Dark Dragon to become its soul, he rebelled against the Ancients and used Dark Dragon's power to destroy the Ancient civilization.
In order to stop Dark Dragon, the Ancients created another monster, White Dragon, which wasn't as powerful as their original creation and was defeated by it. However, while unable to defeat Dark Dragon, White Dragon weakened Dark Dragon enough so the Ancients could seal it, just as Zeon was sealed.
It should be known that in the backstory of Shining Force II, Darksol is said to be Demon King, leader of the demonic race which fought with the Ancients and incarnate forms of various aspects of Darkness. Is probably Darksol joined the demon race after being unable to taking revenge against the Ancient civilization, and became a Demon King because of his unique dark powers.
[edit] Shining Force
It seems that Darksol was able to escape Dark Dragon's body before the seal was completed. Since his only purpose was to be Dark Dragon's soul, he traveled to the future, using the Ancients' technology, to an era when the magical seal could be destroyed. Breaking the seal was a complex process, however, and Darksol needed resources. In order to acquire them, he used his magical power to charm the King of Runefaust, Ramladu, and indirectly gained control of the Runefaust kingdom. Charmed by Darksol, Ramladu promoted him to Commander of the Runefaust Army.
Under the command of Darksol, the Runefaust Army invaded other countries so that the villain could obtain the artifacts necessary to break the seal. Darksol was aware that two Ancients would come from the past in order the secure the seal. They were the brothers Max and Kane. They came aided by a robot army, but Darksol defeated all of them easily with his formidable magical powers. Max and one of the robots, Adam, were able to escape, but Kane and the leader of the robots, Chaos, were captured by the villain.
Darksol used a mask to control Kane and made him one of his lieutenants. He also reprogrammed Chaos and many other creations of the Ancient technology, like Torch Eyes and Steel Claws, to work for him. With the Runefaust Army, Kane, and the Ancient technology, nothing seemed to be able to stop his intentions until the Shining Force appeared. The Shining Force was led by Max and defeated the Runefaust soldiers in battle after battle. They were able to break Kane's mask, which made him become good again. Unfortunately, when Kane tried to stop Darksol from getting an artifact known as the Book of the Ancients, Darksol killed him.
When Darksol was completing the ritual to unseal Dark Dragon, the Shining Force appeared and defeated him. However, they were unable to make him stop the ritual, and Darksol and Dark Dragon became one again. The Shining Force tried to fight Dark Dragon, but the monster seemed to be invincible. Max was finally able to use his sword, the Chaos Breaker, to destroy Dark Dragon.
[edit] Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict
Darksol was still not completely finished, however. Many years later, his loyal minion, Mishaela, eventually managed to revive him, sacrificing her life in the process. Darksol revives in the form of a huge monster emerging from the ground, with only his armor resembling his old form.
He faces the Shining Force again, now led by Kane's son, Ian, and aided by Max and one of Zeon's minions, Odd Eye. The evil Ancient was not completely revived, because the presence of the Devil King Zeon, who was sealed in the same place, hindered the revival process. Not at his full power, Darksol was defeated by the Shining Force and destroyed by Ian.
In the end of the game, it's mentioned that Darksol wasn't completely destroyed and still may be revived in the future. Darksol also leaves a son - Mephisto - the antagonist of Shining in the Darkness.
[edit] Shining Force III: Premium Disk
Darksol is the final boss of the hard-to-find Shining Force III: Premium Disk. This disk contains only bonus battles, and very little plot development. The player fights the Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict version of Darksol, which cannot move, but his stats are much higher; in fact, he is the strongest opponent of the whole Shining Force III collection.
