[edit] Gameplay
The gameplay in Dark Savior consists of three different modes, a standard exploring/platform jumping/puzzle solving, a simplified beat-em-up mode similar to that of Street Fighter and a section of the game where you can explore towns and talk with NPCs.
[edit] Parallel System
Dark Savior hosted a unique parallel system. At the start of the game, the player has access to three of the game's parallel storylines, depending on how he/she performs in the first level of the game. Five parallels can be accessed in the following ways:
- Parallel 1: The Hunt for Evil - This can be accessed by reaching the captain's cabin in greater than 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
- Parallel 2: A Hunt for the Heart - This can be accessed by reaching the captain's cabin between 3:30 and 4:30 and defeating Bilan.
- Parallel 3: A Hunt for the Lies - This can be accessed by reaching the captain's cabin in less than 3 minutes and thirty seconds.
- Parallel 4: A Hunt for the Truth - This can be accessed by completing all the previous parallels.
- Parallel 5: This can be reached in the same way that Parallel 2 is but by losing the fight with Bilan in the captain's cabin.
[edit] Plot
Garian, a bounty hunter from the country of Rajeen, is hired to accompany the monster Bilan as he is taken as a prisoner to Jailer's Island across the ocean on a ship. When Jack, Garian's talking bird, informs Garian that Bilan has escaped from his cage, Garian sets out to stop Bilan who has made his way to the captain's cabin. Depending on how fast the player manages to traverse the first level and reach the captain's cabin will determine which parallel story will proceed. When the player completes a given parallel and the game credits are finished, Garian is once again awakened by Jack and the story starts over (thus allowing the player to continue the adventure by reaching a new parallel story). In parallels 1, 2, and 3, Garian arrives at Jailor's Island and is caught up in a series of quite different events that ultimately link together with one another in the game's fourth parallel.
