[edit] History

The band was originally formed in 1995, by five people: Brett Hestla of Virgos Merlot, Troy McLawhorn of Doubledrive, Clint Lowery of Sevendust, Corey Lowery of Stereomud, Stuck Mojo, and Will Hunt of Skrape. But they didn't make a record through the years because the members were in different bands until they came together again in 2004. The band is considered a sort of supergroup considering the fact that all five members have spent time in nu metal and hard rock groups of varying success, although the band members disagree with this classification, largely because, with the exception of Sevendust, none of their prior projects fared very well commercially.

On June 14, 2005, the band released their first album, Twelve Year Silence through Warner Bros. Records. The first single from the effort, "Brother", was a surprise hit on active and alternative stations, although the follow-up, "Pieces", did not fare nearly as well.

On September 5, 2006, Dark New Day released an EP through iTunes called Black Porch that features new tracks "Breakdown" and "Storm" as well as acoustic versions of songs from Twelve Year Silence. The only single that was released was the acoustic version of "Follow The Sun Down".

In 2007, the band posted 2 songs on their MySpace page: "Fist From The Sky," a much heavier and faster-paced song than anything that was on Twelve Year Silence ; and "Hail Mary," a slower, almost progressive song, almost reminiscent of one of Brett's previous bands, ViRGOS. Both songs retain the melody and excellent full-band harmonies that the band has become known for, while adding new dimension to the Dark New Day catalog.

In September 2007, Clint posted on Dark New Day's MySpace page saying that the band returned to the studio to record their next album with producer Dave Bendeth[1] and on December 5, 2007, the band posted a blog on their MySpace page announcing that the album mixing was complete, and that they would soon issue a statement regarding a release date. It has been speculated that the album would be released sometimes in 2008.

They have recently posted a song on their MySpace page, Goodbye, which has been confirmed by Will to be on the new album.

Some possible track titles for the new album include:

  • Fiend
  • Goodbye
  • Hail Mary
  • Outside
  • Simple
  • Vicious Thinking

On March 25,2008, Clint posted a blog on the Dark New Day Myspace page saying that he has left the band so he can rejoin his former band Sevendust. It is unclear if Dark New Day will stay together, but blogs by Will Hunt hint around about staying together.

On May 25, 2008, the band Sw1tched posted a blog on their myspace stating that BC Kochmit had joined Dark new Day as their new guitarist. A press release is expected very soon from both Dark new Day and BC Kochmit.

On May 28, 2008, Dark new Day officially announced their new lineup, including Bradley "BC" Kochmit as their new lead guitarist and without Troy McLawhorn. It was not announced where Troy will end up permanently, though it was alluded to in an interview that Troy would now be a permanent member of Seether. They also announced they would be releasing a series of Demo Tracks as downloadable "releases" while we wait for their new album. Two songs from these were put onto their myspace, "Fiend" (Version 1) and "I Don't Need You".

[edit] Korn, Sevendust, Evanescence & Seether

In 2007, Clint toured with Korn as their live guitarist for 8 months until he left in October 2007. On March 26, 2008, Clint announced that he had rejoined Sevendust, and will be touring with them for the indefinite future.

On May 17, 2007, it was announced that both Hunt and McLawhorn would temporarily join Evanescence as their touring guitarist and drummer, respectively.[2] Evanescence lead singer Amy Lee stated that "We're just borrowing Will and Troy for awhile" and that they would not be leaving Dark New Day.[3] Their last show with Evanescence was in December 2007 when the band finished touring in support of The Open Door. It is unknown at this point whether or not they will be a part of any future projects with the band.

As of February 15, 2008, Troy McLawhorn has joined Seether as their touring guitarist.

[edit] Trivia

  • The song "Pieces" contains a verse from the song "Back Again" by The Devine, a band that frontman Brett Hestla also sang for, that eventually became Virgos Merlot. The verse reads "The wheels they turn for you, a deity for two. Holding on it's true, won't bring it back again. The way you look my friend, it's closer to the end, I'm holdin' out my hand to bring it back again." This verse is also included in the song "Could've" by Virgos with a slight variation in words.
  • The song "Pieces" was recently featured as background music for menus in the videogame WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006.
  • The song "Brother" is one of the songs that comes with the U.K., U.S. and Australian release of the Xbox 360.
  • In addition to his time as frontman for The Devine and Virgos Merlot, Brett Hestla was also briefly a touring bassist for the band Creed. Hestla also runs his own studio in Orlando, Florida. Besides Dark New Day, bands that have used Hestla's facilities include Faktion, "Framing Hanley", "Charetta", "Signum A.D.", "Waking Season", Dmanufacture]]
  • Sevendust remains the only band in the history of Dark New Day's members that still exists and continues to be successful; all the other groups had disbanded prior to Dark New Day's formation.
