Dari Jean Taylor (born 13 December 1944, Rhondda as Daria Jean Jones) is a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom.

She went to Ynyshir Girls' School in Ynyshir in the Rhondda Valley near Porth, then Burnley Municipal College. At the University of Nottingham, she did a BA Hons degree in Politics. She did an MA in Social Policy at the University of Durham. Taylor was a councillor on Sunderland Metropolitan Council from 1986 until 1997. In 1970, she became an assistant lecturer at Basford College of Further Education on Stockhill Lane (New College Nottingham), then a lecturer at West Bridgford College of Further Education on Greythorn Drive. In 1986, she became a part-time lecturer at North Tyneside College of Further Education on Embleton Avenue (Tyne Metropolitan College). She was a researcher for the GMB Union from 1990, then the Regional Education Officer of the northern region from 1993 until 1997.

[edit] Parliamentary career

She has been Member of Parliament for Stockton South (including the Hartburn area), since 1997. Stockton South is a fairly affluent area of the North-East, atypical of the North's social class breakdown. Stockton South has a higher proportion of home-owners than those renting properties, in contrast to most Northern seats.

In 1997, Stockton South was seen as a model for the country as a whole, in terms of distribution of wealth and ethnic make-up, this led to many visits by the elite from the three main parties in an attempt to win votes. It was believed that if Labour won the seat, they would be able to win a majority in Parliament. Dari Taylor beat Tim Devlin, the Conservative MP for the Constituency, in 1997, and again in 2001. Similar to the national scale, Stockton South had a markably lower turnout in 2001, but still voted for Labour. In 2005, Dari won again, this time against actor James Gaddas. Despite her losing 2000 votes, neither opposition party capitalised.

She is the daughter of Dan Jones, former MP for Burnley. She married David Taylor on July 18 1970 in Westminster. They have one daughter.
