The Darüşşafaka Association is one of the oldest associations in Turkey and its history begins in Ottoman Era. Regarding to Sultan's firman, Darüşşafaka Association was founded in 30 March 1863 for the training and education of the needy orphans with the name of "Cemiyet-i Tedrisiye-i İslamiye". It is first activity was educating prentices of Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) in their spare time. The name of the association was altered to "Türk Okutma Kurumu" and lastly to "Darüşşafaka Cemiyeti" respectively in 26 April 1935 and 3 January 1953.
Darüşşafaka Association's main institutions are Darüşşafaka High School and Darüşşafaka Sport Club. Currently, besides the school and sport club, the association has some eventide homes and hospital mostly serving to its donors.
