Darío Cvitanich (spelled naturally as Cvitanić) (born May 16, 1984, in Baradero Buenos Aires Province) is an Argentine football striker of Croatian descent. He currently plays for Banfield of the Argentine Primera. On 22 April 2008, he agreed terms to sign with Ajax and will begin playing with them next season.
Though born in Argentina, he is of Croatian heritage and also holds a Croatian passport. The Croatian Football Federation have kept an eye on him and he could be called upon to represent his "second home", Croatia, in the future. Unlike Bilos, who is also an Argentinian of Croatian heritage and was summoned by the Croatian Football Federation which he turned down, Cvitanich explained that he would be honored to represent the country of his great grandfather if he was given the opportunity.

[edit] Playing Style
Cvitanich is most commonly used as a designated striker, although he has been played numerous occasions in an attacking midfield role. He is fluent in any offensive position, with a different state of mind and playing style to most other forwards. He is able to adapt well to sudden opportunities and blemishes which may occur in a game, as seen commonly during his time at Banfield.
[edit] Club Career
[edit] Banfield
Cvitanich was at Banfield since 2003. He made his debut for the club at the age of 18 on October 20, 2003 in a 3-1 defeat to Olimpo de Bahía Blanca. He scored a hat trick in a 4-0 win against Newell's Old Boys on April 27, 2007. He played, and scored, for Banfield in the Copa Libertadores 2007.[1]. He served as a loyal member of Banfield during his early youth years in Argentina.
[edit] Ajax
Being watched by many clubs, in particular Atletico Madrid, Cvitanich eventually signed for Ajax on 22 April 2008[2] for a reported 6 million euros, although he will not leave Banfield until the end of the Clausura 2008 tournament in June 2008.
