[edit] ITER
Hey, no problem. I was actually working that section over myself; I opened the main article again to check for something and noticed that you'd improved it already! So if I hadn't been editing, I probably wouldn't have touched your work. But yeah, the Wikipedia rocks.
BTW, I've been thinking lately about going the fusion/plasma physics direction. What's the program at Princeton like? (It's unlikely that I'd get in, but I just have to ask =).) - mako 08:05, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
Well, the program at Princeton is pretty amazing. The people here are among the smartest that you'd meet anywhere. The professors are all very nuturing, caring, and enthusiastic. I find it extremely easy to make friends here.
On the academic side, some classes are quite amazing. Others are horrible. You have free-reign over which you take or ignore, however.
The first term or so revolves around taking 'prelims'. These exams cover undergraduate physics and are among (or are) the toughest in the world. You learn much by the time you pass. You have several shots at it, but everyone wants to get through the first time.
The research is extraordinarily exciting. I doubt you'd find a better place to go to grad school in fusion. You become apprenticed to some of the best minds in the field, and it's impossible to not become fired up about the implications of what you're doing.
You need to complete a first year experimental project and a second year theoretical research project. After this you may begin work on your thesis. The time to graduation is roughly five years, this is the shortest program length anywhere in the US.
If you're considering fusion, consider well. I think that this is the most exciting field in existence today, and one that should reward well due diligence. However, it's extremely difficult to understand everything that's going on, and that can cause a bit of anxiety. Math and Computer Science is much, much easier. - That sounds awesomely hardcore. Good luck to you.
- And yeah, my fusion class was quite disorienting for a time as the professor went from one discipline to another. Eventually I had to accept that it wasn't possible for me to learn all the background material in one semester. It became mostly plug 'n' chug with the Plasma Formulary, but I think I did get a good overview of the field. - mako 20:44, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Energy portal
Hi! As a contributor to WikiProject Energy development, I thought you might like to be aware of the opportunity to contribute to the new Energy Portal, now that there is one... No need to reply. Gralo 17:33, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Energy portal & future selected articles
Hi! Over the past couple of months I've been spending much more time than I should developing the Energy portal, and intend asking for a portal peer review within the next day or so.
The portal provides a showcase for energy-related articles on Wikipedia. One of the most prominent ways is via a the selected article that is currently changed every 6 weeks or so. It would be good to increase this turnover, and with three Wikiprojects dedicated to energy-related topics and a good number of articles already written, I'd like to suggest that members of each Wikiproject might like to use the 'selected article' to feature some of their best work.
With this in mind, I'd like to suggest that your Wikiproject bypasses the normal selected article nomination page and decides collectively which articles are worth featuring - or these may be self-evident from previous discussions - and add short 'introduction' to the selected article at the appropriate place on page Portal:Energy/Selected article/Drafts, which includes further information. Your personal involvement would be welcome!
Please make any comments on your Wikiproject talk page, my talk page, or on Portal talk:Energy/Selected article/Drafts, as appropriate. Gralo 15:28, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Please help improve Plug-in hybrid
You are listed as a participant in WikiProject Energy development, so I am asking you to please consider helping to improve the plug-in hybrid article. This is an ad hoc article improvement drive. BenB4 08:09, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
