I'm not too good with AFDs, but it looks fine to me. You can always ask for a second opinion on the IRC channel for admins too. MECUtalk 01:35, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nice idea

I saw your nice United States Ambassador to Angola page. I've started one for Singapore but it's not as good as yours yet. The ambassadors to S'pore are all political appointees so they have long resumes and some already have individual articles. VK35 16:30, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Adoption

Hi I'm looking for adoption :-) Ploughstar 16:25, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

I'll be glad to adopt you if you like. I took a look at your contributions and you seem to be doing fine so far. Feel free to ask any questions here. As a general rule of thumb, let's conduct a thread on the same page on which it was started. In other words, if I leave you a message on your talk page, you can answer it there. I will put your talk page on my watchlist. If you ask a question on this page, I will answer it here. It's much less confusing that way!
One quick comment: When you leave a message for a user, it's always best to start your comment with a new heading to separate if from the previous thread. Notice that I have inserted the heading "Adoption" above your message here. When you go to a user's talk page, click the link that says "Post a comment" if you want to start a new thread. That will leave you a small box above your comment in which you can enter a short title. If you are replying, of course, then just enter your indented response below the message to which you are replying. Regards, ●DanMSTalk 23:19, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Page you restored into user space for me.

thanks. You're right, that is _so_ not the page I wrote... someone spammed it into a brochure text. you can go ahead and delete User:Rboatright/USMK -- thanks Sorry for the trouble. Rick Boatright 03:22, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mocker

Hi, and thanks for getting back to me! While the character is referred to as The Mocker, other characters such as The Joker, The Flash and The Avengers appear as Joker (comics), Flash (comics), Avengers (comics), etc. I was looking to keep things consistent. Should The Joker, etc., entries have the "The"? We'd have to change hundreds of entries at Wikipedia:WikiProject Comics. Thanks for any help/advice. --Tenebrae 23:26, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:USMC_Ka-Bar_traditional.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:USMC_Ka-Bar_traditional.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 23:46, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your signature

Please correct your raw signature on your preferences page. The signature has an extraneous “</div></div>” at the end, which fouls up the formatting on pages in which your comments are within a DIV. I had to search for this error in one of your recent comments on the AFD page. If you look at the source formatting on this page you will see it. Thanks. ●DanMSTalk 05:38, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Student Youth Network

Hey Dan. Yeah, I can appreciate that some of the text on that webpage was copy and pasted, but a good portion of it wasn't. For instance, the information on callsigns, transmitter strengths and basic information were legitimate article info. I am more than happy to rewrite the page to fit Wikipedia specifications, but it would be a million times easier if you could email the deleted article back to me. Cheers. --Ken1984 12:31, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

        • Helpful would have been if you had simply given some diffs at the top of this thread. In the future, you may want to dispense with the mystery to help speed things along. —Wknight94 (talk) 03:55, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
          • Why? I was asking to Dan to restore the histories. He knows what he has restored recently, I'm sure he knows what it is. And if it was so truly helpful to have diffs, perhaps you should have found them yourself rather than searching for diffs to find my identity :) 86.137.57.73 03:58, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
            • I did look for diffs. With all of the fuss you riled up - what with a new WP:ANI thread and all - I expected to find some egregious policy breach. I'd no way of knowing this was all triggered by two little slip-ups from over a week ago - one of which was re-deleted anyway. Again, this could have been simplified by pointing out those two examples in message number one - possibly even using your original account to begin with. Instead, there are three sections on two pages involving around a half-dozen people including myself on a troll-hunting expedition. Read WP:POINT and try helping more than hindering in the future. —Wknight94 (talk) 04:17, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Question

I used to edit under the name User:Orangemonster2k1, but abandoned the name because of a user. Moved to this one, but the editor I abandoned my original username because of tracked me down. So, it was all for not. My question is, can I get the edit history and other information from the User:Orangemonster2k1 account transfered to my current username, User:Neutralhomer? I would appericate any help you can give. Take Care...NeutralHomer T:C 01:38, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately, it is not possible to reattribute previous edits. See Wikipedia:Changing attribution for an edit and Wikipedia:Changing username. The former page suggests that the best way to accomplish your result is to make a list of all contributions of Orangemonster2k1 from the contribution history and to post it on your Neutralhomer user page or a subpage of your user page. Also, you can redirect the user page and subpages of Orangemonster2k1 to Neutralhomer, or post a notice on the former that you are now the latter. If you need assistance, please leave me a message. ●DanMSTalk 02:07, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unusual Adoption Request

Hi! Im an English teacher in Toluca Mexico (west of Mexico City). My Advanced B classes will be contributing to Wikipedia as the focus of their English course for Fall 2007. I am looking for people who would like to mentor my students (who will be working in groups) as they do the following assignments: Edit and article (adding a citation), writing a stub with a citation, translating an English language article for Spanish Wikipedia and for the final project, writing a full article for English Wiki (they can expand on the stub mentioned previously). What I would like to do is put a list of "mentors/adopters" on my talk page as a kind of short cut for my students, who have limited time to get things done. The semester begings Aug 6, but the real Wikipedia work wont begin until the beginning of Sept. If you would like to add your name to my list, please go to my talk page and add it there, perhaps with a short introduction, if you like.

Thank you!

[edit] Move Request

Hello, could you please re-open the move-request at Eisack. At my count I see ten opinions posted, six were for move, two were opposed to the move, and two were essentially neutral (i.e., weak oppose, doesn't matter to them). That seems like reasonable consensus to me to move the page to the correct page based on the overall consensus found for this province. Also, if the discussion is heated, shouldn't it remain open per policy? Icsunonove 01:10, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Let me ask a couple of other admins who participate in requested moves for their opinion on this. Frankly, if a consensus has not been reached after 12 days, it does not seem likely that a consensus will ever be reached. However, if the other admins agree, I will open it again. I will get back to you when I have had a response. ●DanMSTalk 01:14, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. How do you decide on consensus also? I see it as basically 6 support, 2 oppose, and 2 neutral. Icsunonove 01:37, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Determining consensus is often difficult. The closing admin has to look at several factors: The number of opinions on both sides, the quality of the arguments, sometimes the experience and knowledge of the contributors, the willingness of the contributors to work together, and perhaps other subjective factors. Of course a closing admin can be mistaken too. This expresses it rather well. See also ConsensusDanMSTalk 16:09, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
  • ps. greetings fellow aerospacer :-) aircraft or spacecraft? regards, Icsunonove 01:38, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Aerospace used loosely. My company used to manufacture satellites (in another division) but that division was divested several years ago. Now we are concerned mostly with systems and equipment for the defense industry. Actually, aerospace is probably no longer an accurate description. ●DanMSTalk 01:55, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Needing Adoption

Would you adopt me? I'm so new to this I'm not even sure what that means...=/ I would like to edit a photo on a page because my children have taken over a role on a TV show and it's still an old picture of the old actor/actress. I've edited the info but can't get the picture changed =/ --Sunflwrr629 03:53, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

  • I would be glad to adopt you. All that means is that I am here to help you get started, answer questions, etc. Feel free to leave me a message here any time you want. To keep things simple, if you leave me a message here on this page, I will answer here. If I leave a message for you on your talk page, you can answer there. That avoids breaking up a thread between pages. ●[[

  • Yes, I saw that I was mistaken later after I went back and revisited his page. I was not paying close enough attention to the signature on the message! My apologies. By the way I would avoid making attacks on other contributors, even on a third-party user page like mine. You never know when it could come back later to bite you in the a**. Remember that every edit that you make is indelibly recorded in your edit history, and it would not be difficult for another editor to find your remark in your edit history. ●DanMSTalk 23:55, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism

I don't know whether it matters or not, but the AfD log here has been vandalized and editors' comments changed before you closed it. Not sure whether I can undo it or not. Douglasmtaylor T/C 02:53, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

  • I don't know that it really matters now that the article has been deleted. If the article comes up for deletion review, then the history of the page would be available for editors to review. If I were you I would not bother with it. ●DanMSTalk 02:58, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
P.S. I have protected the article against re-creation, so it should not be a problem anymore. ●DanMSTalk 02:59, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. While I was scratching my head, though, appears a couple other editors went and fixed it.  :) Douglasmtaylor T/C 09:20, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
I had asked another admin for his opinion on whether or not I should revert the vandalism and he said that I should do so. So I looked at it but I could not figure out how to revert changes interspersed with good edits. So in the end he made the changes for me. ●DanMSTalk 23:55, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] request

Could you please keep an eye on User:Geuiwogbil, because he just redirected over 74 articles without concensus because of his opinions. The articles didn't need to be redirected, and the thing they were being redirected to never even covered the subject! Plus he redirected a GA class article Black Marsh without concensus, and people have already objected to it so I reverted all 74 edits. Please block him if he does this again and starts edit wars. The sunder king 14:44, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

  • I took a look at the user’s changes. I do think that you are correct that he should have sought consensus from the Wikiproject before making so many changes in those articles. However, I have to agree in principle with his rationale, that there is far too much unreferenced information on some of those pages. I also think that there is too much information, period. The pages come close to being a game guide, which Wikipedia is not. I would suggest that the project take a look at those articles with the eye to paring them down and perhaps combining some of them. You have a couple of possible remedies for the user’s actions. One, try to work it out with the contributor on his talk page or on the project talk page. Remember to be civil and try to work out a consensus. Two, if negotiation fails and you believe that the contributor is working against consensus, you can raise the subject at the Administrator's noticeboard. Also be careful not to start an edit war. That is a very bad thing for Wikipedia and it does not help anyone. ●DanMSTalk 00:10, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] looking for adoption

I am a 60 something hypnotist. Got started on the Apple IIe. Am having a devlish time finding my way around here. Well I should say I graduated to a Mac and Firefox, but it was a huge jump from telneting and doing eBay.

I need help with getting a chapter from a medical text which the author is willing to waive copyright (and publisher agrees) onto Wiki. The article is in an Integrative medical text. There is also a service mark in the article. I assume there will be editing for that issue, but not sure what to advise the doctor.

I am confused about multiple licensing and want to make sure I do the best for the author.

I live in California and can be available most any time.

Thanks for listening.

imageryguides 06:07, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello, Imageryguides. Glad to hear from you. I would be glad to assist you if I can. Do you plan to type the whole chapter into the article? Regarding the copyright: The author should realize that the text must be released under either a public domain release, or into a GFDL release. That means that anyone in the world can take the text and use it for any purpose with no restrictions. I would suggest that you first create the article in a subpage of your own user space, prepare it until you think that it is ready for posting on the wiki, then create a new article and copy the new text into the article. You can create a new sub-page into your space by creating a link like this [[/articlename]] on your own page, then clicking on that link and editing it. Note the slash in front of the article name—that makes it a subpage of whatever page the link is on. Hope this helps. Contact me again for assistance. ●DanMSTalk 23:53, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the start. I don't yet understand the system to follow subpages. I need to figure the system out better with practice. Right now I'm stuck getting the chapter on site. I found the text for the GFDL. Where is the public domain release you refer to? The whole chapter is offered, but some is too technical. There is a service mark too.

If the chapter is uploaded with permission and license done, is the article public domain or must it be published (posted) first? imageryguides 03:21, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

On your own user page, edit the page and add this text at the bottom: [[/pagename]] (notice the slash preceding the name). Substitute pagename with whatever you want to name the page. Save your user page. Then you will see a red link on your page with the name of the page that you just added. Click on that link. You will then be editing your new page, which by virtue of adding the slash in front of the name, becomes a subpage of your user page. The name of the new page will be User:Imageryguides/pagename. Put the text into the new page and save it. You can then use that link on your user page to go back again and edit the page later. If you ever lose track of your page or forget what you named it, you can follow this link to find a listing of all of your user pages and subpages. As far as putting the material in the public domain, it is not really a formal process. All it needs is a statement on the page that the author has released this material into the public domain. After you have saved your new page, let me know and I will take a look at it and make any suggestions. ●DanMSTalk 23:54, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Please adopt me Pez1103

I need help on the Morgellons article. I have been trying to make the article more balanced, more NPOV, but am meeting a lot of resistance and downright hostility. This page has a history of mean spirited nastiness directed at anyone who does not believe the disease is delusional. It is currently very biased. I tried to make edits last week and they tried to have me blocked permanently from the system. There are several editors on that board who have an agenda and use weasel words and cherry picking to distort the article. I must warn you, if you try to help me, you will be in for a fight. Please check out the discussion page and the article and let me know if you are willing to help. It's important -- people with Morgellons are very ill physically and it is affecting thousands of children. A wiki article which dismisses them as delusional hurts innocent sick children. Please leave a message on my page and let me know what you decide. Thanks Pez1103 18:25, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Question: Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Wiki Page

Dear Dan,

I just discovered the Wiki page on the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Monroe, MI) page that you created. There are two other branches of the IHM Congregation that are not mentioned - Immaculata, PA and Scranton, PA. I would very much like to add these and can do so on the history section (as soon as I learn how to do this!) I will need to ask you to change the top portion - the header to reflect the three congregations and their locations (not all Monroe, MI).

Can you help me, please? Would you kindly write to me at: <personal info deleted by DanMS>.

My name is Sr. Fran and I am the Director of Communications for the IHM Congregation in Scranton, PA.

Thank you, Dan. -Sr. Fran

I will send you a message as requested. ●DanMSTalk 00:06, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Coos Bay

Howdy, I'm happy to see you added an image to Coos Bay (article about the body of water). However, the bay and jetties shown are not that of Coos Bay, though they look quite similar. I followed the link to the USACE image description page and discovered they have it wrong. Google's satellite view would reveal the differences such as the lack of Coos Head Coast Guard station. I'd volunteer to swap out the image, but I don't have a fair use one handy. Shall keep my eyes open, though. Boo Twitty 19:28, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, upon examining the Google satellite view, I see that you are correct. The image does not resemble the satellite image. It's not surprising, though: I have found many errors in the USACE images and descriptions. I did not catch that one, however. Now if only we can discover what actual river the image represents. It does look like the Oregon, Washington, or northern California coast. ●DanMSTalk 23:57, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
I think perhaps the image is the mouth of the Umpqua River at Reedsport, Oregon, a few miles north of Coos Bay. Take a look at this satellite image and see if you agree that it is the Umpqua. ●DanMSTalk 00:03, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, Turns out it's a pic of the mouth of the Umpqua River at Winchester Bay, the next bay north of Coos. I do see a Coos Bay pic on the USACE site, but it's an oblique angle that doesn't show much of the bay itself. I'll scout around for something. Boo Twitty 00:09, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] reminder to mentor

Hola Mentors!

Im sending you this reminder because you volunteered to mentor my students in English Advanced B as they become contributing members of the Wikipedia community. We start working with Wikipedia in earnest next week. I ask you to take a look at your entry in the Mentor Table at Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Mentors

Please update the information, esp. with what your technical and informational expertise is or, if you have decided that you no longer want to participate, please remove your information from the table. Please watch the pages associated with the project. Students will contact you via your user page and as soon as my students have user pages, I will put them on the navigation bar associated with the project.

I don’t need to remind you that your job is NOT to write their assignments for them, of course. I certainly will tell my students that… and the fact that you are volunteers that don’t have to help them… so they need to be nice. If any students misbehave (tho I don’t expect it) don’t hesistate to contact me and I will take care of it. The goal of this project is to integrate successfully into the Wikipedia community. Anyway… what I really need your help with is helping students get oriented to Wikipedia, make appropriate changes and write about appropriate topics (see Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Syllabus for assignments). I also need your technical expertise… I am only an English teacher after all! I appreciate what technology does for us but I am no technical expert!

Again, thank you for volunteering and you will hear from us again soon! Thelmadatter 19:43, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:WilTirion.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:WilTirion.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information.

Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 19:15, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] United States Ambassador to Yemen

Hi Dan, I was looking at your "United States Ambassador to Yemen" page and it seems to have a lot of Yemeni history that is really just about Yemen and not about US Ambassadors. Can I suggest you delete most of this, and where appropriate incorporate it into "History of Yemen" Mark 20:27, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Waterwheel Schematics

I love your waterwheel schematics but I was wondering if you have any or could make any the same for breastshot and backshot wheels? 82.27.25.54 14:23, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] United States Homeland Emergency Response Organization

I am confused. This page states "The neutrality of this article is disputed. Please see the discussion on the talk page." However, I am unable to locate a Talk page on this subject. I note that you are a contributor to the article and ask that you guide me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pupluv (talkcontribs) 11:46, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Please help me again Dan !!

Dan, you've been a tremendous help in the past, and I need your wikipedia knowledge, once and for all, to put an end to the struggle that I've been having, keeping Images from being removed from Wikipedia.
Originally, I uploaded Book Covers, and included "Low resolution - Fair Use rationales" that have never been disputed. Sadly, all newspaper articles I've uploaded about the bands, and members, have been disputed, with the "fair Use rationales" that I provided for them. As a result, I re-uploaded them as the "Copyright owner - releasing them to the public"
Now sadly, not only have they been disputed, and marked for deletion, but all of the original photographs from the 50's, 60's and 70's that are original prints, OWNED by Ken Kalmusky (whom the articles are about) - and inherited by his son David Kalmusky, whom I got the images directly from (They've been tagged as Flickr' images??) with complete permission to release the copyright of these images, to the public, through Wikipedia, for the purpose of creating these articles.
now they're all up for deletion and I'm hoping you can help me properly get these images to "Pass" properly, and legitimately.
thanks so much for all your time, and past help with these articles. Qwepasdl (talk)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Babcock Wilcox logo.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Babcock Wilcox logo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 01:00, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Logo-cit.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Logo-cit.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 01:02, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Sirocco from Morocco.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Sirocco from Morocco.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 18:58, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Babcock Wilcox logo.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Babcock Wilcox logo.gif. You've indicated that the image meets Wikipedia's criteria for non-free content, but there is no explanation of why it meets those criteria. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. If you have any questions, please post them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

Thank you for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 17:39, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
