I have been a Wikipedia user since July 12th, 2006. In that time, I have am amounted 1973 mainspace edits,[1] but I try to increase that numbers as often as possible.

[edit] Main Activities

While I strive to vary my edits, I often find myself participating most frequently in certain activities.

[edit] Templates

I have created six templates, one of which has been deleted.[2]

[edit] {{A B Spellings}}

I created this template when I was getting frustrated by frequent spelling change edits by users on the pages Color and Yoghurt. Luckily since then, the edits have become less of a problem, but I keep it on hand just in case.

[edit] {{Hi and Go}}

Hi and Go is my welcome template, that I used to use a lot, but now I only use it when I have free time. This was the first template I "created" - but it is strongly based off of another template, with slightly different wording. I'm thinking about reworking it soon, as I have seen a few welcome templates that I like a bit more (the biggest problem with this one is that it's too text-heavy).

[edit] {{IIUS}}

This is the template I'm most proud of, it stands for "Illegal Immigration [in the] United States", and it was created in response to a request at WP:RT.[3] When other people started editing this template, I got kind of defensive, but working with them has really let me grow as an editor, and I now have no problem with most major changes. User:Will Beback has been one of the biggest sources of help for this, as he always maintains a cool head - something I have to work on.

[edit] {{Obit}}

One day I was browsing through CAT:CCSD (see below) and I found an article that read a lot like an obituary, but I couldn't find a great template for it, so I created this. It's still in the working stages, as of right now I'm the only one to look at it, but I hope I can use it in the near future.

[edit] {{Obnoxious}}

And now for my deleted template. This template was created to say that a section like Trivia or Pop Culture References is too big, and it's making the page look bad. The template was nominated for deletion, and I changed the wording up to be a bit lighter, but despite desperate arguments by me, I could not convince people to save it. For a while I was pretty upset by this, as there wasn't a great alternative put in (I believe the only one was phrased "This article has a Trivia section" - which limits the sections it can be applied to and ignores half of the Wikipedia policy "AVOID trivia sections"), however eventually {{Cleanup-laundry}} was presented to me, so I backed off.

[edit] {{Who?}}

I created this as an alternative for {{weasel}}, with the idea being that the term weasel words is kind of WP jargon, and having Who? next to something like, "Critics often say ..." is blatantly clear. Granted, it doesn't work for everything, as sometimes the weasel words are mixed up into a phrase, as described on WP:Weasel. It's not frequently used by me, however a few editors have decided they apparently like it and use it a lot. This is another case where if I happen to see something, it's just handy to remember.

[edit] WP:RT

I actually created the archive system for this - which sadly took about 4 hours, very annoying, repetitive work. There is a more detailed description of it Wikipedia talk:Requested templates#Update, but in short... I started out by keeping what was there - three separate classifications, "Templates Created or Updated" (for just that), "Requests for existing templates" (for templates that were either not created due to an alternative, or not updated if the template already existed), "Requests closed without template" (only for templates that weren't created for a reason besides "it already exist"). I then divided it by year, and then month.

[edit] Articles

[edit] Category:Wikipedia backlog

Often when I'm not interested in a specific article, I'll go through the backlog - specifically Category:Articles with unsourced statements. I'll usually just find a source and get out, but there's one page that I did a lot of work on...

[edit] 2004 NBA Finals

I found this with the backlog. After examining the article, I realized that while it had only been cited for one unsourced statement, it turned out that near the entire thing violated WP:NPOV. I went through it all and found sources (most by nba.com - the official site of the NBA (to ensure accuracy)) and rephrased POV statements (like "incredible"). It took about two hours, and while the article is far from perfect, it was hopefully a step in the right direction.[4] Since then - I have fixed it up with slight changes.[5]

[edit] Other

Usually, however, I'll have a specific interest in mind - most often generated by stumbling on a page. Some other major revisions I've made are found on Gangs, Spider-Man 3 and somewhat on Saenger Theatre (New Orleans).

One of my on-off activities would be going to Category:Contested candidates for speedy deletion and trying to fix up whatever I feel like as much as possible. I figure that if an author is involved with the article enough to come back to it and put a {{hangon}} tag on, and if the author was civil enough to put the hangon tag on as opposed to just erasing the speedy template, then there's a good chance that beneath some bad phrasing and format, there may be something that can be worked with. Most often what I do is either find sources (although a lot of times I'll just explain to the author how and why they should do this - A. because the author obviously didn't know you need sources, B. because I can be lazy), add headings, and correct format. The article that I've worked on the most would probably be Politicks - where I found a few key citations, fixed an image's placement, added more refs etc.[6] It's frustrating working here, I usually try to make edits even on ones I'm pretty sure are to be deleted - just in case I'm wrong and they're saved - so of course if they are deleted it's all that work to waste.

[edit] WP:Spotlight

I first saw spotlight with a Wikipedia ad, now displayed at the top of my userpage, and I instantly learned how to use an irc program just so I could be a part of it. Just recently though, do in part to my constant badgering, it's gained some new life - and I've been able to contribute to Environmentally friendly, William I of England, First Lady, Third World, History of Russia and Oil spill. and I was made an op! It's a great program and I'm getting a lot of editing experience + instant feedback, so I couldn't be happier.

[edit] Barnstars

I got my first barnstar from rockpocket - who I should have mentioned before, but now will have to do. Rockpocket adopted me a while back, and has been an amazing help throughout my stay here at Wikipedia. More later.

The Template Barnstar
I hereby award you this barnstar for your fine contributions to templatedom. Rockpocket 07:17, 22 May 2007 (UTC)diff
